guy faw wkes…

In 1605, Guy Fawkes and his gang planned to blow up King James I and the government. But he was caught in the act – late at night on 4 November. Guy was sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered – they hanged him, cut him down and then cut him up, all while still alive. This was a super-horrible death. But Guy cheated the executioner. He jumped off the ladder and broke his neck. He was dead when they cut him open. In 1605, Parliament passed a law saying people had to celebrate Guy’s failure every 5 November. That law was still in force until 1859! We still have Bonfire Night today – but because it’s fun, not because it’s the law!…

PIT-IFUL PEOPLE! A famous sage described how the first man and woman came from the sweat of a giant’s armpit. Yeesh! If you died in battle in Valhalla, you came back to life to fight again the next day .Heaven sounds exhausting ! IN COLD BLOOD! A Viking saga told of a huge flood in the early days of the world made of the blood of a dying frost giant! Floods of water are perfectly bad enough, thanks, frostie. SPIT’S CRAZY! 1 NASTY CUT Cure: rub honey into it! Honey is an antiseptic, and it is ideal for treating wounds. Hope they didn’t do this near any beehives! 2 MILD PAIN Cure: eat some gar den shrubs! The Egyptians would use dried leaves from the myrtle bush to treat pain. Strangely, it worked! 3 SERIOUS HEAD WOUND Cure: drug patient then remove the damaged skull! This was done to a government official, Khety, who’d been attacked. The wound was sewn up – and Khety lived. 4 FEELING SICK Cure: eat limestone! We use powdered calcium carbonate to treat stomachaches today – that’s limestone! 5 BLINDNESS Cure: mash a pig’s eye with honey and powder, and pour into the patient’s ear! This obviously didn’t work. The Egyptians really made a pig’s ear of this one!…
