As we were putting this issue together it became clear that there were two strong themes coming to the fore with the stories we have gathered together. A lot of them are real top-of-the-bucket-list destinations and experiences: seeing wild and perpetually hungry polar bears in the austere surroundings of Churchill in Canada; travelling to›the literal end of the Earth in Antarctica to be transformed by the all-encompassing remoteness and quiet white-on-white beauty of it all; taking a slow boat through the port-producing region of Portugal, one of›the›hottest hotspots in the world right now (and one of the destinations on›my personal bucket list). The other standout you’ll notice when flicking through the following pages is a strong›Asia focus, which makes perfect sense given our collective love of the›continent that is so near…

the lowdown

SOLD ON SARDINIA With Australian property prices having long passed the ridiculous, there is an alternative to the soaring cost of a home, but it’s going to add a bit of time to your daily commute: the town of Ollolai on the rugged, sun-bleached Italian island of Sardinia is selling houses for just €1. Most of the 200-year-old stone dwellings are in need of serious restoration and renovation, and indeed this is one of the caveats of the bargain basement price; buyers must commit to refurbishing the house they buy within three years of purchase. The idea is to revitalise the town, which because of its ageing population and the allure of the big cities on the mainland is in real danger of dying. Here are five reasons you should invest…

modern wonders

Time was when libraries were grand propositions, where the learned and those who wanted to be so flocked to absorb knowledge in their hushed surrounds. Europe has some of the most stunning historic libraries but if the insanely brilliant Tianjin Binhai Library is anything to go by, we are entering a new golden age of architecture dedicated to the book. Check out these amazing structures on your travels if you are in any doubt: • BIBLIOTECA VASCONCELOS in Mexico City has been labelled a megabiblioteca (mega library), spread as it is over 38,000 square metres and encompassing works of art by prominent Mexican artists and a botanical garden. • The rounded exterior of the BRANDENBURG UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY LIBRARY, in the city of Cottbus in Germany, features a jumble of letters from…

flash back 1918: lithuanian independence

On 16 February 1918, the small Baltic nation of Lithuania restored its independence. But the declaration that was signed that day was lost in the turmoil of subsequent wars and Soviet occupation, only to be rediscovered recently in German archives. It has been returned to Lithuania for centenary celebrations, but just on loan for now. So FOLK, a local design studio, has devised a way to restore this document symbolically by recreating the font that was originally used. Named Signato, it took four months to create – with every letter redrawn with precision to emulate the old cursive script.…
