As someone who loves to cook (and eat!), I can honestly say that appliances really do make the difference between a standard kitchen and an extraordinary one. Getting to trial new appliances is one of the very best parts of my job; I love learning about their latest features and how they assist with cooking delicious meals. Though it’s tempting to keep your trusty old oven or those benchtop appliances you’re so used to using, renovating your space is the perfect excuse to invest in some new appliances that are capable of making your day-to-day culinary projects easier, and so much more enjoyable. Tempted? Flick to page 79 to check out some of the hottest benchtop appliances on the market right now. On the topic of good food, we love Jax Hamilton…

what we love

TERRIFIC TILES We recently spent some time mingling with architects and designers at Tile Warehouse’s annual tile event. European trends were shared by Ariostea and APE GRUPO and discussed by all, and we found Envirospec’s presentation on building to NZGBC green standards particularly interesting. Best of all, we were able to spend time admiring Tile Warehouse’s stunning displays; this one was without a doubt a top pick. W: tilewarehouse.co.nz ONE-STOP SHOP Archant has opened up a new showroom in Auckland, which is styled as a planning hub for renovators. It boasts a designated Specifications Centre for kitchen and bathroom designers and stocks some of the most prestigious European brands, including Santamargherita, SCHOCK, FLORIM Stone, Franke, furnipart, Arborite, Eurostone and Heritage. Sinks, taps, surfaces, handles and accessories can all be found at this one-stop…

There’s nothing we love more than speaking to experienced designers about their design process, and what they think is new and trending. Here, we chat to Certified Designers Society member and 2018 NZ Designer of the Year Ingrid Geldof about all things design. Where should renovators start when thinking about a new kitchen? IG: There are many key considerations that should be explored, including your budget, how long you plan on living in the home, the amount of space available, how you use the space, the appliances you would like to incorporate, and your storage requirements, just to name a few. If you are building your dream home, renovating a house you wish to stay in for some time or want to sell for top dollar, employ an expert. It is an…

nz food celebrity: jax hamilton

The shoe on Jax Hamilton’s left foot will not match the shoe on her right. It’s a good hint that this New Zealand celebratory chef with the mismatched shoes is: a) Anything but boring b) Creative c) Quirky d) Full of fun Born in England to Jamaican parents and now a Kiwi citizen, Jax describes herself as an inspirational cook who just loves to mix it up by blending a pinch of Cockney cheek with a cup of Jamaican personality, all served up on a home-grown Kiwi plate. She began cooking for her large family when she was seven, and continues to cook for her loved ones now, as a mother. However, her springboard into the foodie world was boosted in 2011 when she became runnerup of MasterChef NZ. She’s been in the public eye ever…

past and present

“In this beautiful heritage home full of character and traditional features, we wanted to reinvigorate the kitchen with a functional, modern layout while retaining its charm. The previous kitchen was dark American cherry timber with stainless-steel benchtops. Combined with a poor layout where the fridge and pantry were at opposite ends of the room, it was important to create a more comfortable work flow. Now filled with stunning soft whites, greys and greens, the new kitchen is light and bright. The dark stain of the island anchors the space, complemented by the elegant tone of the benchtop and greenery just beyond the window. A small granite ledge behind the cooktop provides space for small herb pots to be close at hand and bring the outside in. The uplights above the…
