While kitchens and bathrooms have always been a prime focus when building and renovating, right now interest is reaching the level of obsession. As our houses take on a new identity due to unprecedented time spent at home, as the places where we live, work and teach, as well as eat and gather together, our kitchens and bathrooms are having to perform as multifunctional spaces. More and more people are reimagining their homes to better serve the evolving needs of their family. Open-plan layouts, multipurpose surfaces and clever storage systems are all becoming de rigueur for today’s modern kitchens as we all stretch our culinary wings and adapt to a new lifestyle that requires greater functionality and new levels of familial engagement. But it doesn’t stop there. The necessity of spending more…

what we love

HOW GREEN WAS MY KITCHEN We’re hearing that green is the new blue and Smeg’s olive-green oven and hood shows us what the colour can do to make things 'pop' in the kitchen. The gas ovens in Smeg’s Portofino collection come in orange, yellow and red, and a blue that reminds you of the Mediterranean, but we absolutely dote on the green. The freestanding electric oven has a 90cm x 60cm cooker and an enamelled metal finish to its command panel. Paired with a matching olive-green hood, the results are simply stunning. See for yourself. smeg.com SET AND MATCH When designing a bathroom, integration is the key. Mismatched fittings could spell aesthetic disaster. Novas, a leading creator of design-led architectural products, has unveiled Frame — its brand-new collection of designed-to-match tapware, door hardware…

the inside scoop on tiles

When you think about indoor tiles, you likely picture kitchen and bathroom scenarios. But the functionality of tiles extends beyond wet and high-traffic zones. More than ever, tiles are being applied to areas traditionally covered with wood or carpet. Practical, durable and stylish, tiles come in more shapes than any other type of wall or floor covering. They also rank as the best option for those with allergies or asthma. Regularly chosen for their ability to keep cool, tiles are ideal for an Australian setting. The cooling effect of tiles is most obvious in summer, when air conditioning can take a break while the tiles keep temperatures under control. Before picking your perfect tile, think about materiality (are you interested in a trendy terrazzo, classic marble or durable porcelain? Maybe even…

the wonder of wallpaper

Kitchens, bathrooms and laundries can be given all kinds of character with the inclusion of a well-designed wallpaper. In this feature, the Kitchen & Bathroom Designers Institute of Australia (KBDi) shares three of its favourite wallpaper applications. Melbourne’s Jack Avison of Nosiva Custom Cabinetry took this powder room to a whole new level of luxury with a striking floral waterproof wallpaper. The hues in the design inspired the paint colour, cabinetry and floor tile selections and a thoughtful lighting layout allows the central white flower in the mural design to glow. Brisbane designer Jo Byrom of Jo Byrom Interiors used this fabulous print to great effect in a stunning kitchen project. We love the interest it adds to the space and Jo’s beautiful work in tying together the overall colour scheme. Who wouldn’t…

brilliant benchtops

When it comes to benchtop surfaces, there is a large selection of products to choose from for both bathroom and kitchen spaces. From porcelain and natural stone to timber, laminate and more, there are many different options available on the market. While this allows for diversity in choice regarding colours, textures, style and budget, a big selection often creates an overwhelming sense of confusion. Choosing the right fit for your lifestyle and desired aesthetic is paramount. “There’s nothing more glamorous than showing off a beautiful feature benchtop in a bathroom or kitchen space,” says Kelly Donougher, director and designer at 13 Interiors. “It’s like the art of your wet area, where all the features connect to create your focal point, but it’s also important to get that focal point just right…
