the new science of sweat

On page 72, we explore the future of fitness—how evolutions in technology will change how you work out in the new decade. But we wanted you to look a little further ahead, so we asked you to peer into your crystal (medicine) ball to answer: What’s one fitness innovation you hope to see by 2050? Beer that makes you fit. @MateuszSkrzypczak Homes built with home gyms in mind or even gym rooms being standard. @JohnClement102 Cheaper dumbbells. @SamuelTR I’ll be 80 years old in 2050 and plan to use the same set of iron dumbbells I’ve been using since 1995. @MattyToms568 A device that ACCURATELY measures how many calories a person burns in a day. Not an estimate but an honest to goodness real measurement. @JerryKnaak Artificially engineered scanning stations that can mark out what body parts are in the red…

if you don’t use it, do you lose it?

—@rianmcneil IT KIND OF DEPENDS on what you mean by it. Muscle? Yes. Mind? Possibly. Vacation time? Probably. (Check with your employer.) Cell-phone data? Maybe. (Check with your provider.) Ability to focus? Yes. The poquito Spanish you learned in high school? Sí, sí. Penis? (Like, for sex.) Nah. It’s not going anywhere. Energy? It can be neither created nor destroyed. (See: thermodynamics.) Your old AOL email account? Nope. (You have 445,000 unopened messages!) Food? Depends if it’s perishable. Money? No. Opposite. (Google “compound interest.”) Ability to focus? Yes. Vestigial limb? Yes, but it’ll take a few millennia. That loving feeling? Gone…gone…gone… Imagination and/or sense of the awesomeness of our untapped potential? The last one is a little tricky. As I’m writing, the first batches of coronavirus vaccines are being distributed to the people who need them most, and the lightning-fast development and deployment of these lifesaving shots…

INSPIRATION UPDATE! Actor Ethan Suplee wrote about his 200-pluspound weight-loss transformation in our October issue. Today, he’s at 10 percent body fat with a six-pack. “My goal now is mastering the maintenance phase,” he says. “I spent decades adjusting to the suffering caused by diets. Now I’m learning how to love my life.” Read the full update on MensHealth.com. December’s Men’s Health featured Dune warrior Jason Momoa having so much fun on our cover. Also having fun? His 15 million Instagram followers, who had a few things to say. @prideofgypsies Jason Momoa One of the best photo shoots I’ve been on thanks to @menshealthmag link in bio for the whole article. HarleyDavidson, dune buggies and the mud what is there not to love. Mahalo to my team and everyone involved on this, Can’t…

a journey from desk jockey to duathlon competitor

The Setback On a typical day, I was commuting 70 miles, sitting behind a computer for eight hours, and then crashing on the sofa. There I’d watch TV and eat junk food until bed. By 2013, I was 250 pounds. I felt sluggish and tired most of the time. I felt uncomfortable and out of breath even doing simple activities such as walking up stairs. It was like my body was entirely drained of energy. The Wake-up Call I did just that: I woke up. One day, I woke up and thought, If this is how I am in my 40s, how bad will it be when I am in my 50s, 60s, or 70s? Or, would I even make it to be that old? I realized that as I was getting older,…
