charity’s kings & queens

Forget bake sales and car washes, this is the kind of fundraiser we want to go to! Last week, some of the biggest names in Hollywood donned their finest frocks as they stepped out for the LuisaViaRoma for UNICEF Gala. Held in Capri, Italy, the annual event aims to raise funds for UNICEF Italia. An auction that included items like a race car owned by Steve McQueen and one of Pablo Picasso’s notebooks raised more than $8 million to support the foundation’s efforts in distributing the Covid vaccine. The glamorous evening was topped off with a performance from Katy Perry, 36, who was joined by John Legend, 42, to perform Moon River in honour of one of UNICEF’s most beloved Goodwill Ambassadors, Audrey Hepburn. Then the Roar singer got the crowd on…

this week in... new zealand woman's weekly august 16, 2021

They were extraordinary circumstances for extraordinary Kiwis. In a Covid world, without their families by their sides or crowds in the stands, this year’s Olympics showcased the sheer drive, talent, and mental and physical strength of each of our athletes. To even qualify for such an elite event is admirable and with some going on to win a medal – or in some cases more than one – was wonderful to watch. I was often glued to my television, riding the highs and lows of their sporting journey, and I’m surely not the only one to have shed a tear or two. I reckon they are all champions. On page 16, we look back on what has been a stellar couple of weeks for New Zealanders with the stand-out magical…

the twins turn five! jenny-may’s dreams for her boys

It’s a clear winter Friday and Jenny-May and Dean Clarkson are midway through explaining the significance of the TV presenter’s new moko (tattoo), a series of stars and birds from her neck to her bellybutton, when there’s a cacophony of voices downstairs. The couple’s twin five-year-old boys Te Manahau and Atawhai have arrived home from school, and Atawhai is eager to show Mum his large, swirly lollipop. Jenny-May gives him a cuddle and gently discourages him in te reo from devouring the treat straightaway – after all, the whole household, including Dean’s parents Maurice and Jocelyn, and Dean’s daughters Libby-Jane, 16, and Leah, 14, aren’t far off heading to dinner at the local restaurant. It’s a typically upbeat start to the weekend, yet for a few months, it’s been tough. “It’s been a challenging…

Reese Witherspoon has collected many accolades throughout her career and last week, she added a new title to her collection as the world’s richest actress. The news comes after an announcement that a majority stake in her production company Hello Sunshine has been sold in a whopping $1.3 billion deal. The mum of Ava, 21, Deacon, 17, and Tennessee, eight, founded the company in 2016 with the mission of creating women-led stories, and has since had a hand in some of the biggest screen successes of the past few years, including Big Little Lies and Gone Girl. Reese, 45, was overjoyed when the news of the sale was finally announced and released a statement assuring fans that they’d still champion women. “I started Hello Sunshine to change the way all women are seen in…

For Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, turning 40 is more than a milestone birthday. It’s time to kickstart a new era of her life and set her sights on a career in politics. And that could mean aiming as high as becoming the President of the United States. Meghan, who celebrated her 40th birthday last week, has been able to tick lots of items off her “to-do” list, including becoming a successful actress, supporting causes she’s passionate about, marrying the man of her dreams and having two children. Now she can embark on the next stage of her plan to live an extraordinary life, say sources close to the mum of Archie, two, and Lilibet, two months. “She has her eyes set on the US presidency,” says her biographer Omid Scobie. “Meghan is the…
