june special

We all need a bit of luck now and then, but beware – sometimes good fortune is not all what it seems. Luck seemed to be on his side when Colin (pg8) met Lynne. He was so smitten that he even left his wife to start a new life with her. Sadly, his decision would end up costing him an arm and a leg. After years of poor health, luck was finally on her side when Pauline (pg13) was given a lifesaving kidney. But her luck soon turned when she learnt that her new organ was actually killing her. Terrifying! An injured child is every mum’s worst nightmare, and we felt Hawa’s (pg22) pain as she watched her little boy’s life support being switched off after a horrific accident. But she prayed for…

'come and stab mummy'

Playing in the park with my daughter Corrayah, four, and son Aason, two, I caught sight of someone watching me. He was good looking with dark hair, and I couldn’t help but blush as he smiled at me. I smiled back at him shyly, and he came over. ‘Hi, I’m David,’ he said. We got chatting, and I introduced David to the kids – although they were too busy playing! David Gifford, 37, was so charming, paying me compliments and even warming up to Aason, helping him down the slide. We swapped numbers, and soon went on our first date. David told me all about his job as a petrol station attendant, and I was instantly smitten. Things moved pretty quickly after that, and David and I were soon a couple. And a few months later, he moved in…

out on a limb

My wife Sue tidied up the lounge, switched on the kettle, then looked at her watch. ‘She’ll be here soon,’ she said. As predicted, the doorbell rang and our guest trotted inside. ‘Hi, Lynne,’ said Sue. ‘It’s lovely to meet at last.’ Sue and Lynne had become friends online. They were both into cross-stitch and arts and crafts, and now Lynne had come to visit. But as she strolled into the living room, there was a bang. ‘Owww!’ Lynne yelped. She’d stubbed her toe on the sofa and it was bleeding. ‘Let me see to that,’ I said. I rummaged in the freezer for a bag of peas, then we sat on the bench in the garden, and I helped her clear it up and elevate it. As I carefully wrapped Lynne’s foot in a bandage, we got chatting. There was definitely a…

saving gracie

Sweat dripping down my legs, I stripped off my gym clothes and chucked them in the washing machine. But it wasn't enough for a load… Breezing through the house, I collected all the dirty linen. ‘Sorry, Gracie,' I said, disturbing my dozing moggy as I stripped off my bedsheets. Me and my hubby Cliff, 51, had got Gracie in April 2016. I'd just been made redundant and diagnosed with ovarian cancer – a double whammy! But Gracie gave me something to wake up for. By last December, I was healthy again, but I still treated Gracie like my baby. Now, I chucked the bedsheets in the wash. By then it was nearing 5pm, so I got busy sorting dinner. Heading back to the machine, I started a 20-minute quick wash. ‘Dinner's on!' I called to Cliff when he came in from…

taking control

An accountant whose desk job caused her to pile on the pounds has shed almost a third of her body weight in just eight months after calling in a TV health coach. Self-confessed chocoholic Helen struggled to find the time to exercise due to her demanding job, but she decided to take control after tipping the scales at 15st 3lb. She enrolled in an online programme – Take Control – with trainer Oliver James, who featured on ITV’s This Time Next Year programme. After only eight months, Helen shed nearly 5st and now weighs just 10st 11lb. ‘I’ve always struggled with my weight,’ said Helen. ‘I managed to control it when I was in my 30s, but after that it became a real struggle. I was going from one fad diet to another ‘I associated dieting with…
