autumn special

As we all know, life is never perfect. But it’s when we take – and give – second chances, that we start to see the best in others and ourselves. Our hearts go out to Samantha (pg8). She endured seeing her daughter suffer a horrific accident, and life would never be the same. But young Becky was given a second chance at life, even if it didn’t last as long as she’d hoped. We admire the pure strength of Figen (pg26), too. Her son was cruelly ripped away from her in an instant, but she’s decided to take a chance and forgive his killer – now she’s reaping the rewards of her good deed. Dad Jason (p22) never expected his daughter to turn out the way she did, but he gave fate a…

hunted by hate

Rushing home from my job in finance, I opened my laptop and started typing. Writing about my new favourite face scrub, I attached a snap – and within minutes, sent my post to the world. Streams of positive comments flooded in. I’d been running a blog on Tumblr since I’d been a teenager… At first, I’d share my favourite recipes – from nutritious salads to low-calorie treats. But when I started to post about different skincare and beauty products and treatments, my audience went wild. When I was younger, my grandma Valerie, 70, taught me the importance of a decent scrub and cleanser, and said to always use a night cream. ‘Make sure you take your make-up off thoroughly,’ she’d said, wagging her finger at me. Now I was teaching others the lessons I’d learnt from her. As…

second chance

Going through the mail, I spotted a letter for my daughter Becky. ‘For you, love,’ I smiled, passing her the envelope. Ripping it open, she screamed. ‘I got in!’ she cried, jumping up and giving me a hug. ‘I knew you would,’ I beamed. ‘I’m so proud of you.’ It was 2008, and at 15, Becky had been accepted on a college course to study travel and tourism, business and Spanish. She’d dreamed of working as a holiday rep abroad, and I had no doubt in my mind that she’d do it. Apart from being clever, she was very bubbly and outgoing, always going out with her friends. She also loved spending time with me, her brother Callum, then 12, and her stepdad Dougie, 43. ‘You should go out to celebrate,’ I smiled. Sure enough, Becky had arranged to meet…

Heaving myself off the bathroom floor, I felt dizzy and lethargic. It was spring 2018, and I'd come down with a sickness bug, couldn't stop throwing up. But as a stay-at-home mum of two, there were no sick days for me! Watching my kids, Millie-Mae, three, and Maeson-Evan, 20 months, was a full time job. I didn't know how ill I was Their dad Jamie, 29, worked away on building sites, creating walls and partitions. I could hear the kids playing in the living room downstairs, but I just felt so weak. So I called my neighbour Alex, 27. ‘Can you come and help?' I asked. She came over right away, and helped me hobble down the stairs. ‘I'll be OK now,' I assured her. Reaching the living room, I was greeted with teddies and dollies lined up…

sniffed out

Dear Bessie, When we found you in the shelter, you were the smallest of all the pups there. Just 10 months old, a pin in your hind leg, cowering and shaggy. You were cute but terrified, and we loved you instantly. We got you cleaned up, and brought you home with us. And you took a shine to my hubby Ron, then 72. He’d sit with you for hours on the sofa. Just gently stroking your fur, calming you down. ‘There, you’re all safe now,’ he’d soothe. A little yap in response, you seemed right at home. We’d had dogs before, but there was something about you. You were different, special. And as the years passed, we got to learn just how special you really were. The perfect pet, you obeyed our instructions. We had our routine, and you had yours. You were always…
