april special

Being true to yourself can bring so much joy to your life. No matter your passions, don’t be afraid to express yourself. We’re all unique and there’s something truly beautiful in that. This month, we’re celebrating plenty of incredible people. Take Nikki (pg54) for example. As rap-star Eminem’s biggest fan, she’s proud to have him tattooed all over her body. She doesn’t care what people think and wears her tatts with pride. From just 10-months-old, Caroline knew her son was different (pg30). After years of searching for answers, finally Hayden was diagnosed with autism and ADHD. However, he’s never let anything hold him back and continued to explore his love of space. Now, Hayden has his very own doll named and inspired after him. After being diagnosed with PCOS at just 17-years-old, Hannah…

never felt pain like it

Tearing into the wrapping paper, my partner Mark, 48, had presented me with a big box. ‘Oh, wow! You got me roller skates!’ I squealed, giving him a big hug. From the age of 15 until my early 20s, I’d been obsessed with skating. It had been years since I’d strapped on a pair of wheels though – I couldn’t wait to try them out. ‘I thought you could bring them on holiday,’ he suggested sweetly. In January 2018, the pair of us jetted off to one of our favourite holiday destinations – Abu Dhabi. I was looking forward to a four week break in Abu Dhabi and Thailand to celebrate the New Year. The day after we arrived, I pulled out my skates from the suitcase to take them for a test run. ‘You’ll need…

Noah's very first word in the zoo Eagerly trying to get my four-year-old son Noah excited for the day ahead, I listed off all the animals we’d see at the zoo. ‘Monkeys, peacocks, snakes, lions…’ I beamed. It was October 2020, and I was eight-months pregnant. My partner Jake, 30, and I were taking Noah and bump to Colchester Zoo for an entertaining day out in Essex. Our little boy Noah was severely autistic and non-verbal – he had never spoken a word. He could ride buses all day long, and loved playing on his iPad. And he knew exactly what he did and didn’t like. Today, it seemed, Noah didn’t like the zoo. I walked round the enclosures, pointing at animals, trying to spark some interest. ‘Look at their long…

welcome to the world

A moment we will all remember forever ZSL Whipsnade Zoo's giraffe herd welcomed a giant six-foot-tall new arrival in December 2020 – on what has been dubbed ‘the day of hope' by staff at the UK's largest zoo. The female calf was born at the same time as the first COVID-19 vaccine was given to 90-year-old Margaret Keenan, during the early hours of Tuesday 8 December – and in recognition of the poignant moment, the infant has been named Margaret. Margaret the giraffe calf is a hugely positive boost for the population of her species, which are officially classified as Endangered in the wild. ZSL Team Leader Mark Holden said: ‘With fewer than 9,000 individuals living in the wild, this little one's arrival is a vital boost to the numbers of Endangered giraffe species.' Margaret…

on a roll

Trapped at home during lockdown, I longed to visit my favourite place. If only Greggs was open, I thought. Dreaming of a piping hot, flaky sausage roll from the bakery made my mouth water. Salty pork covered in layers of buttery pastry was my all-time favourite snack. Before the pandemic hit, when I was studying hairdressing at college, I used to have two sausage rolls a week. I often took my one-year-old son Brody to our local Greggs bakery as a treat. Now, in July 2020, I missed it so much. Taking to Instagram to do something daring, I contacted a local tattooist with a mad and unusual request. I want the Greggs logo tattooed on my bum, I wrote. To prove my dedication. Buzzing to do it! You're a legend, he replied. I was booked in for his very first…
