life with a baby...

... can turn your world upside-down: the sleepless nights, the crying, the endless nappy changes! And just when you think you’ve got through those first 12 months and can start to expect smoother days ahead, your little bundle of joy becomes a walking, talking toddler! Nothing can quite prepare you for the excitement and challenges that come with this new stage in your child’s life. The joy of those first words and emerging independence are beyond thrilling, but the new-found tantrums and stubbornness can also catch you off guard. In this month’s issue, we have included a special toddler section. It’s full of great advice from teaching your child to be respectful to easing your toddler out of nappies. If you’re the parent of a toddler, you’re navigating this new stage…

word-of- mouth mum

“My toddler loved the option to either face me or outwards, depending on her mood.” Before using the Mamas & Papas Urbo2, had you thought about the kind of stroller you needed? Yes, but like every decision with buying “baby paraphernalia”, it is so hard to compare products. This is especially the case with prams. My partner and I spend more time talking about these kinds of purchases than what car to buy! It's important to us that it's easy to use and lightweight. What are your favourite features of the Mamas & Papas Urbo2? As soon as I put it together, I loved the look and the stylish feel of the pram. Other great features are how intuitive and simple to use the pram is, the large hood (which protects from the elements)…

letter of the month

THE RIGHT TO FEED I almost kissed the pages of your magazine when I read the article on breastfeeding in public (Out and About, September 2016). I loved the way it was matter of fact about a woman’s rights but also gave lots of helpful advice on how to go about it. Before I had bub number one I was, perhaps naively, confident about breastfeeding and didn’t know what the big deal was – it’s just feeding your baby. And while I stand by this statement, the reality was much harder than I had ever imagined. For starters, although we live in a liberal neighbourhood, I was made to feel uncomfortable when I breastfed in public. My lowest moment came when I was subject to abuse from a bus driver. I don’t want…

SAFE SLEEPING WITH BUB I just wanted to say thank you for the wonderful magazine you prepare each month. I’ve had a rough introduction to parenthood since my son was born 15 months ago. He was a premature baby and suffers with severe reflux disease, tongue and lip ties, and feeding difficulties. I have noticed since subscribing a few months ago how wonderfully unbiased your magazine is. I especially loved the short article on co-sleeping (Co-Sleep Cohorts, September 2016). It’s the only way we have coped with a very irritable baby, and I commend you on providing accurate and safe guidelines. Thank you for showing that different ways of parenting are okay. I’m glad I subscribed as I find the articles informative and learn something new each month. Carla, via email SCRATCH AND WIN Thank you…

what works for me

SOCK SAVERS My 11-month-old son wiggles around in his highchair and flaps his arms in excitement at mealtimes. I have put baby socks on the highchair legs to stop them from scratching the wooden floorboards. It’s also very helpful as he’s learning to walk and has been ‘rearranging’ the furniture in lieu of using his walker. I use the socks with little grips on them so it’s even more secure! Lisa, via email SWING SHADE This is a tip for those who’ve got a swing in the backyard for their kids. Take the sun cover off an old umbrella stroller and use this to create a shade for your backyard swing. We simply clipped it onto the ropes of our swing and now our daughter has protection from the sun when she swings. Considering…
