LUCIAN FREUD: HERBARIUM (by Giovanni Aloi; Prestel, rrp £39.99) The painting of beautiful white cyclamen pasted on to the linen cover of Lucian Freud: Herbarium is perhaps the most atypical image in the book. For this is not a herbarium in the sense that we generally understand it – a collection of different plants, pressed, preserved, classified. Here we have a gathering of 67 paintings and etchings, but few of them are plant portraits in the manner implied by the cover. Freud rarely painted flowers. His favourite subjects were yucca, bamboo, thistle and a large-leaved sparrmannia, or African hemp, the last of those said to have been grown from cuttings his grandfather, Sigmund Freud, brought from Vienna.
