Things can happen to new boats too. ¶ The delivery from Florida to New York went flawlessly. A group of us took turns running the boat north, and I had the wheel on the North Carolina-to-Virginia leg. Shortly after getting the boat settled in New York, I planned a long weekend in Cape May, New Jersey. ¶ Two friends and I left on a Friday morning in mid-June. Exiting New York Harbor and heading south, there were 2- to 3-footers on the nose. Our vessel cruised smoothly at about 25 knots. One of my buddies, Dave, headed to the salon for a nap. JASON DUNBAR WAS LOSING SLEEP. His friend owned the 106-foot Broward Altitude Adjustment II and wanted Dunbar, a broker with Luke Brown Yachts, to sell it. Dunbar knew the statistics on Browards: One sells, on average, every 66 days in America. Others had already sold for the year. The sale was likely to take longer than his friend wanted. ¶ The factor of time suddenly became key to the sales equation. While some owners make price the key factor in a sale, hanging onto a yacht for years—and paying the carrying costs until they find a buyer—Dunbar’s friend most valued time. Derecktor shipyards, long known for its shipyards in Mamaroneck, New York, and Dania Beach, Florida, has signed a deal to renovate Florida’s Port of Fort Pierce into a refit facility for power and sailing yachts bigger than 200 feet. ¶ “We are limited to 900 tons; everybody else is similarly limited,” says John Koenig, Derecktor’s head of communications. At the new site, he says, Derecktor will have 28 feet of water right up to the bulkhead and a 1,500-ton Travelift with no overhead restrictions such as bridges. ¶ “We will have the ability to compete with the European yards for refit work on the 150-, 180-, 200-foot sailing yachts,” he says. “Perini Navi sent us a very nice letter of encouragement, saying they’re excited to have the option of a…

38'1" LENGTH OVERALL 12'6" MAXIMUM BEAM Just before this year’s boat shows in Miami, I had the chance to run the Tiara Sport 38 LS, part of a new series of outboard-powered vessels from the Michigan boatbuilder. The weather was blustery with spattering rainstorms dimpling Biscayne Bay’s gray chop. It wasn’t great boating weather, but it was great conditions for boat testing. ¶ My test vessel was special because it unveiled a new propulsion package representing a partnership between Volvo Penta and Seven Marine. The optional helm-to-prop system combined Volvo Penta’s Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) with Seven Marine’s beastly 527 hp 6.2-liter V-8 outboard motors.
