editor's letter THERE’S NOTHING LIKE the feeling of coming home. I’ve spent the fall season settling back in from travel: My brother got married in Hawaii! He’s the youngest in the family, so it’s a momentous and extra-special occasion that was kicked off with bridal-party trips to the deserts (Palm Springs and Las Vegas) and culminated in the big day. An MCM Time Capsule

This home’s story begins in the 1950s, in Wayzata, Minnesota, a small town on the Northern shore of Lake Minnetonka about 10 miles from Minneapolis. Gordon and Kaye Jones hired architect Loren B. Abbett to design their home, although Gordon, with his engineering background, was involved in all aspects of the design. The redwood-clad, 2,390-square-foot home situated on almost two acres was completed in 1957. Gordon and Kaye didn’t have children, so when Kaye passed away in 2019, six years after Gordon, it fell to their niece, Sherry Holtmeyer, to sell their home. “The house had been a real labor of love for Gordon and Kaye,” Sherry says. “It was their mark on the world. Christmas is a time for nostalgia, and while Cathy Burns, a retired grade school teacher, is known to get creative with her décor, the key ingredients for the season’s festivities are always the tried-and-true ones. atomic kitchens NESTLED IN WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA, a classic 1955 Eichler was in need of upgrades to brighten and honor the original design. Homeowners Dianne and Tyler Ott arranged a collaboration between Karen Nepacena, principal designer at Destination Eichler, and Erin Eyerly, architect at Eyerly Architecture. The kitchen, dining room, breakfast nook and the family/media and living room areas took roughly four months of construction in addition to months of design and project planning. “After the homeowners addressed typical projects required in an older home, like replacing siding and upgrading electrical panels, they decided they were ready to invest in other areas of the home, starting with the kitchen and shared living spaces,” Karen says. RAISING the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is a cherished tradition with roots dating back to 1931. It all started on a cold night during the Great Depression when workers at the Rockefeller Center construction site decided to bring a little cheer to their rather grim holiday season. They pooled their money to buy a 20-foot balsam fir and decorated it with homemade garlands made by their families. Though modest, this first tree symbolized hope and resilience in difficult times. In 1933, the tradition became official when Rockefeller Center held its first public lighting ceremony.
