I blow fuses on my bow unit when I switch to the down/side-scan feature on my HDS-16 at the console. It’s a new Ranger. Also, I’m killing an AGM battery quickly. What could be going on? @Z5201, Instagram Israel Britt of Buck’s Island Marina in Southside, Ala., says big-screen units use a lot of amps, especially when switching from down scan to side scan. You may have a draw on the system; perhaps the wiring to the graphs is too small. He recommends you consider a Sea Clear Wiring Harness or something equivalent that allows continuous flow of amperage. I’M A TERRIBLE tournament angler. I was a boat captain for my son, Austin, when he fished for the Oak Mountain High School team. All four years of his career, he and his partner never cracked the Top 20 with me at the steering wheel. My biggest tournament achievement occurred when Austin and I fished a 10-man team derby at Alabama’s Lay Lake and finished second. We walked away from that one with almost enough money to pick up a celebratory Whataburger on the way home. Research by the University of Florida indicates the state’s 76,000 small ponds are emitting more carbon than they store. “How do they compare to other aquatic ecosystems?” asked Audrey Goeckner, now a Ph.D. student in soil and water sciences on the main UF/IFAS campus in Gainesville. The study was conducted as part of Goeckner’s master’s thesis and was designed to measure the amount of carbon leaving ponds. According to Goeckner, ponds begin to store more carbon as they age, when sediment and biochemical properties promote the amount of carbon stored. “This means the older ponds are doing less of an ecosystem disservice to us than the younger ponds. But, we will always have a fresh new batch of young ponds that are just pumping carbon out to the atmosphere.”…

Wounded Nature–Working Veterans, a nonprofit group dedicated to the removal of debris from hard-to-reach coastal areas, has a new V MAX SHO 115 outboard on the back of the organization’s 18-foot SeaArk aluminum work boat thanks to support from Yamaha Rightwaters. Technicians from Yamaha Marine University also provided rigging service resources and equipped the boat with Siren Marine technology. The Wounded Nature–Working Veterans team accepted the donation during the 2022 Bassmaster Classic in Greenville, S.C., and will use the new rig to assist in debris removal along U.S. East Coast waterways. “The trash and debris in our waterways cause critical issues within marine wildlife habitats,” said Rudy Socha, CEO of Wounded Nature–Working Veterans and a Marine Corps veteran. “Trash and debris collect at the high-tide line behind marsh grasses and…

I GOT A phone call just the other day from my cousin Brian Bown as he was driving home from fishing two bass tournaments at Logan Martin Lake in central Alabama. Not one after another, but two at the same time. That’s happening a lot these days.
