Missy was a Painted Turtle who lived in a pond. Missy was short for Mskwaadesi’, which means “turtle” in Anishnaabemowin. Her mom had dug a nest and laid her eggs on the sandy shore in the springtime. The eggs stayed warm under the sand until the end of summer.
Then, one hot night, the first baby hatched and climbed up through the sand and out of the nest. Missy was the last one to leave the nest. She took a look around and headed for the water, like her brothers and sisters did before her. The water was the safest place for baby turtles.
