You’ll need: • 2 metre sticks (or rulers glued together)• tall box• 2 paper cups• tape What to do: 1 Tape the metre sticks to the edge of the box to make tracks. 2 Tape the bottoms of the cups together. 3 Place the cups at the top of the tracks and let them roll down. Do they stay on the tracks or do they fall off? 4 Now tape the tops of the cups together and try again. What happens? FACT: Train wheels are slightly cone-shaped, like the cups. This helps them stay on the tracks! How it works When the big ends of the cups are facing out, they can’t balance on the tracks as well. Our friend Avi is taking a commuter train with her mom today! First, we pay for our ride at the machine. This is a commuter train. It carries millions of people every year!
