Leveraging the robo-advice revolution to put women on the financial front foot, two new firms that specifically target women are launching this year. WorthFM (Worth Financial Management) is a collaboration between Amanda Steinberg, founder of female-skewed dailyworth.com, and Michelle Smith, founder of Source Financial Advisors, a firm that caters to multimillionaire women who have been divorced. Meanwhile, former Wall Street executive Sallie Krawcheck has launched Ellevest (ellevest.com), a robo-investment service that wants to “redefine investing for women”. Asmall drinking den under a pasty shop in London’s south west served as the stomping ground for the early noughties folk revival. A performance space for budding musicians, Bosun’s Locker has set the stage for many acclaimed artists, including the early serenades of Laura Marling and Noah and the Whale’s Charlie Fink. But its greatest claim to fame was matchmaking school friends Marcus Mumford and Ben Lovett with their (now) fellow band members Winston Marshall and Ted Dwane who, two years after connecting, formed Mumford & Sons in 2007. The Empowerment Plan (TEP), founded by Veronika Scott as a 20-year-old product design student in Detroit, is also taking on the fight against homegrown poverty. TEP produces water-resistant and self-heating jackets, which can also transform into a sleeping bag or an over-the-shoulder bag. The jackets are made using upcycled automotive insulation and donated fabric sewn by women employed from local homeless shelters, providing them with stable jobs and a chance to regain their independence. “This job helped me gain back my independence and confidence,” says Murl Bryant, a nowseamstress who was unemployed and homeless for four years before joining TEP. “The best part though, is that I get to help people who are less fortunate than me.
