Designed in secret during the 1930s to evade naval restrictions placed on Germany by the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I, the Type II U-boats laid the groundwork for the Kriegsmarine’s wartime submarine force. These U-boats were small, cramped inside, carried just a few torpedoes, and didn’t dive as deeply or travel as far as later German subs, so the 50 Type IIs (there were four subvariants — A, B, C, and D) were primarily used to train German naval officers.
