By the end of the 1960s, convertibles were quickly falling out of favor in the automobile market, with most manufacturers discontinuing the body style by the end of the 1970 model year. As it turns out, convertible model car annual kits had nearly always been much slower sellers than the hardtop variants, so as the 1/1 scale convertibles disappeared, so did convertible model kits.
For example, when the AMT, MPC, Revell, and JoHan 1/25 scale 1970 model year annual kits debuted, only a few convertible kits remained — among them the Revell Mustang, MPC Impala Chevy, and MPC Cougar. To broaden whatever market appeal remained, Revell designed its Mustang kit to build either a convertible or Grande hardtop, while MPC resorted to merchandising its Impala convertible as “The Bat Machine”…
