If you're doing the long haul from Joburg to Cape Town, the N1 can be a lonely place (unless you count trucks among your friends). Whistling Bridge Café, owned by Kim Bahra, is a welcoming, tidy space with plenty of safe parking and an outside area for the kids to run around. There's also a petting farm with some cute-as-they-come pygmy goats and alpacas. There are chickens, too, with“celebrity”names like Henneth Paltrow, Kim Kardashihen, Queen Egglizabeth and Princess Laya.
You can sit inside (there'll be a fire burning in winter), or outside on a stoep with a view towards the Krom River, where you'll see the old railway bridge. Back in the era of steam locomotives, the trains would stop here to top up their water supply, hence the name…
