WHERE IS THE BEST golf town in America? At first the mind wanders southerly, looking for clusters of famous or at least very good courses with warm weather. But that’s a narrow approach. Maybe a better consideration is where would you raise your children if you were hellbent on cultivating within them your love for the game? A properly golf-obsessed mom or dad can do that anywhere, of course, but it’s easier if there’s a village. We should be able to find places in this country where the whole golf ecosystem is thriving. One Golf Digest+ member who reluctantly moved up a tee box during a recent round was 84-year-old Curt McClure (above, second from the right), who typically plays from 6,000 yards but appeased his buddies and joined them at 5,200 yards at his home course of Lubbock Country Club in Texas. It should come as no surprise that our 2024 ranking of America’s 100 Greatest Golf Holes, the first of its kind since 1999, is heavily populated with representatives from America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses ranking. These holes are largely why those courses are considered great. To formulate this ranking, Golf Digest compiled a list of more than 1,200 candidate holes and then asked our course-ranking panelists to judge each on a scale of 1 to 10 in four categories: Aesthetics (the visual and emotional power the hole evokes), Challenge (the degree of skill required to play it well), Uniqueness (how original it is compared to other holes) and Overall (sometimes a hole is better—or worse—than the sum of its parts). TO HIT A HIGH, SPINNY greenside bunker shot, you need a fair amount of clubhead speed. However, the way you generate that speed is critical to being able to stop the ball close to the hole. Many golfers, based on past experiences with taking too much sand, use their bodies to try to create more speed. They either pull the club down hard with their shoulders or over-rotate their body through the shot. If it has been a decade since you’ve been to Pinehurst, it’s time to go—much has changed. There are several additions to the scene, and most of the major courses have undergone serious transformations.
