TheOctober 23/24 gala will feature resident GWR 42XXNo. 4270,WR 4-6-0 No. 7820 DinmoreManor, Modified Hall No. 7903 Foremarke Hall, and SR Merchant Navy Pacific No. 35006 Peninsular&Oriental S.N. The rebuilt Bulleid Light Pacific, owned by Southern Locomotives Ltd (SLL), underwent initial test steamings during the first week of May before venturing out onto the‘Purbeck Line’ for its first light engine running-in trials on May 10. Loaded test runs followedonMay 18, with No. 34028 hauling a train of five Bulleid and BR Mk 1 coaches plus a Class 33 diesel before it worked its first revenue-earning train on May 24, the 10.30am from Swanage to Norden (see centre spread). THE NorthYorkshireMoors Railway has announced the start of an overhaul of WD2-10-0No. 3672DameVera Lynn, costingmorethan £600,000. The start of the overhaul at Grosmont was announced ahead of the first anniversary of the passing of the‘Forces’Sweetheart’at the age of 103. An appeal to raise the funds launched in 2013 has so far raised £175,000, but it is estimated that another £450,000 is still required. The NYMR’smotive power department aims to have the overhaul completed by 2024/2025, to tie in with the locomotive’s 80th birthday and the 80th anniversary of VE Day. THE sole-surviving SouthernRegion Class71electric locomotivehas been cosmetically restored by a teamof staff and volunteers at theLocomotion museumin Shildon. Themixed-traffic Bo-Bo locomotive was one of 24 built at Doncaster Works in 1958 for the Kent Coast third-rail electrified main lines as part of BR’s Modernisation Plan. The engine remained in service for almost two decades before being withdrawn in 1977. Prestigious services including the heavy London-to-Paris overnight ‘Night Ferry’ and the ‘Golden Arrow’ Pullman wereamainstay of the class for many years. However, they were ousted from large parts of the system by EMUs and were hindered by the fact they could not haul night freights when power was turned off for track maintenancework. YORKSHIREWolds Railway volunteers pulled out all the stops to reopen their line on Sunday,May 30, aftermissing the whole of 2020 due to the pandemicwitharesulting loss of income. TWOformer SouthernRegion Class 205 ‘Thumper’diesel-electric multiple units aremoving fromthe DartmoorRailway to the Caledonian Railway at Brechin. A group of CR members have acquired No. 205032, while a private individual has bought No. 205028. Both were sold by RMS Locotec after the Dartmoor Railway Community Interest Companywent into receivership in February 2020. Bogiework is needed on No. 205032 but it is expected to be operational within 12 months, while No. 205028 is a longer-term project. The CR, which carried out biodiesel experiments in partnership with Robert Gordon University Aberdeen in the early 1990s, plans to use the units for trials of battery and hydrogen fuel cell power. The Leighton Buzzard Eastern Link Road forms part of a wider plan to provide homes, retail and community facilities and a new school in the eastern area of Leighton Buzzard. However, it has been necessary to divert part of the 2ft gauge railway a short distance away from its original route alongsideVandyke Road, so it can run under a bridge carrying the new link road. THE restorationof the 90-year-old Stobcross Crane,which oncehoisted steamlocomotives built in Glasgow fromthe quayside on to ships for worldwide export, has taken a significant stepforward thanks to a transfer ofownership of the historic structure tothe heritage-focused Big Cran Company. THE Mid-Norfolk Railway completed itswork to refurbish theB1108 level crossing at KimberleyPark station afteronlyaweek. Theproject used the same technology as the railway’s Yaxham Road level crossing in Dereham, with a systemdeveloped by the Dutch railway infrastructure company EdilonSedra. Once again, it was conducted byamixtureof the railway’s staff, volunteers and contractors from Sonic Rail Services, togetherwith a team of technicians fromTrack Engineering Construction Ltd. THE Hythe Pier Heritage Association (HPHA)placed 99-year-old restored carriageNo.4back on the track, running along Hythe Pier during a brief ceremonyonMay 29. However, far from imposing a typical trapping of the modernnational network on a classic SouthernRailway branch line, the screens are housed in traditional 1950s noticeboard-style frames. Not only do they provide times, but they also show information about the locomotive hauling the train and the facilities in its carriages in a visual ‘KnowYour Train’ form. THE Ravenglass&Eskdale Railway is to hostacelebratorygala on July 11/12 to mark60years sincethe line was saved frombeing closed and scrapped in 1960. ANEWshedfor diesel locomotives at the Caledonian Railway (CR) will also permit the line to keep its carriages under cover for the first time. Currently nearing completion at the CR’s Bridge of Dun terminus, it is 110 metres long with three roads, and is large enough to house 12 main line diesel locomotives. Costing an estimated £380,000 by the time it is complete, it has been paid for by a combination of railway funds, donations, and support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to reinstate locomotive lifting facilities. A£40,000 APPEAL hasbeen launched to returnLMS‘Jinty’No. 47324 to steam on theEast LancashireRailway in2023. The Fowler 3F 0-6-0T is owned by a group of four ELR members but is operated and maintained by the railway under a ‘repair and run’ arrangement. It last steamed in 2014 when its previous 10-year boiler certificate expired but a lack of funds during the Covid-19 pandemic has meant that little work has been undertaken on its overhaul recently. Most of the repairs to its frames are complete, with the tyres having been reprofiled, and ELR fitter Callum Porter said that it is hoped to rewheel the frames in September. TWOlocomotives frommanufacturer Clayton Equipment, best remembered in the railway world for the Class 17 Bo-Bos it constructed for BR in the 1960s, have been running on Midland heritage lines. The sole surviving Class 17, Chinnor & Risborough Railwaybased D8568, has just been repainted into BR blue with yellowwarning panels – a first in preservation – during overhaul at the Severn Valley Railway, where it made its debut in the new guise at the May 13-16 spring diesel bash. It was the first time that one of the Paxman-powered 900hp Type 1s had been seen in blue since the last examples were withdrawn in 1971. BOTH pony trucks for new-build BR 3MT 2-6-2T No. 82045 were almost complete at the Severn ValleyRailway in May. Their frames were placed onto thewheelsets, and the springs installed, before they were turned the rightway round in preparation for fitting under the locomotive. Theoutstanding jobs aremakingand fitting the dust shields over the axleboxes, shapingand fitting the guard irons in front of the wheels, and completing both trucks’ lubrication systems. FORTY years after the last BRtrain left Brechin, the Caledonian Railway (CR) has startedrebuilding the station’s canopy. The last train over the freight-only line on May 2, 1981 was a farewell railtour from Edinburgh, including Class 122‘Bubble Car’No. 55000, now based at the South DevonRailway. By this time the Brechin Railway Preservation Society, formed in 1979, was already established in the goods yard – but BR had removedmost of the glass and lead from the canopy to prevent theft and vandalism by the time the group took over the line. THE first pair of coupledwheels for new-buildGWR4-4-0No. 3840 County ofMontgomeryhave been cast. The Churchward County Trust (CCT) placed the order for the four 6ft 8½in coupled wheels with Trefoil Steel in Sheffield in March, and the first two wheels for the rear wheelset were castamonth later using the pattern loaned by the Great Western Society at Didcot. The pattern had previously been used to cast the wheels for GWR Saint 4-6-0 No. 2999 Lady of Legend. Before the second pair of wheels are cast, Trefoil Steel will modify the pattern to increase the size of the centre boss. LBSCR‘Terrier’0-6-0TNo. 672 Fenchurch is being overhauledat the Statfold Barn Railway nearTamworth with theaim of having it back running on the Bluebell Railway in time for its 150th anniversary in 2022. Fenchurch, the chassis ofwhich left the Bluebell on April 14, is undergoinga 10-yearly overhaul involving both mechanical attention and a thorough boiler repair. Acontractor stripped and removed the cylinder block from the frames so its condition can be assessed andadecision taken as to whether to repair or replace it. In the event of the latter, a replacement set of cylinders has gone to Statfold with the frames. It is intended tohave the frames back at Sheffield Park by next Easter, in time for the locomotive to be reassembled for the summer.
