Judging Home Of The Year is one of the most enjoyable days on my work calendar. Hanging out at the Brickworks Design Studio in Sydney with fellow judges Cameron Bruhn (of The University of Queensland) and Brett Ward (general manager of international marketing at Brickworks) and fully immersing ourselves in some of Australia’s most dynamic residential projects is always a delight. lighting rods When Mornington Peninsula-based Swell Building Group was tasked with the construction of this Belgian-inspired farmhouse, they called on Nicci Green of Articolo Lighting to curate the lighting selections. A desire to test passive and environmentally sustainable design methods led architect Simon Anderson, director of Sydney-based practice Anderson Architecture, to create an off-grid, bushfire-resistant holiday home for his family in the Blue Mountains of NSW. “I thought it would be a great chance to explore lots of things that we do in our day-to-day life for other people,” says Simon, whose award-winning firm specialises in sustainable design. “The idea was to make mistakes ourselves and then use that wisdom on each client. Charles Dickson didn’t always have an appreciation for good design. In fact, he originally studied engineering at university. “I was working with a carpenter on the side and fell in love with timber work, so I dropped out of engineering and enrolled in an interior architecture degree,” he explains. “That’s where I really became exposed to design and where my design journey began.” The course taught Charles to experiment with new ideas and learn from his failures, rather than be defined by them. “The main thing that I took away from it is learning how to take an idea and turn it into something tangible. A NARROW TERRACE on a compact block in Melbourne’s Brunswick was in need of a modern update. The owner had lived there for much of his twenties and thirties and wanted his diminutive home to move with him into the next chapter of his life. And while the temptation might be to knock out those old walls and make it open plan, the design team at Placement Studio took a different tact, creating a series of rooms or ‘intimate gestures’ within the existing slender footprint, with one flowing into the next. Having a mob of kangaroos living with you is exactly what photographer Emma McEvoy and landscaper Brent Wilcox wanted when they bought their bush block in Victoria’s Merricks North. The land is adjacent to Tanglewood Estate, the home of a weddings and events business run by Emma’s family. “We’re a big kangaroo-loving bunch, so when this bush block came up next door to the estate in 2018, Brent and I bought it,” she says. “I work at the estate running weddings alongside mum, so it was a great option to live and work here.” The couple drafted the plans with Ryan Wilcox at Western Port Building Design before their first son, Eddie, was born. “Ryan’s great,” says Emma. “I’m a creative person, so I need to see the design. An untouched piece of land on the edge of a fruit farm, overlooking a trout-heavy stream, is something special. So, when it came time to build a dwelling in this idyllic South African location, smart thinking and sensitive design choices were absolutely essential to limit its visual impact on the environment. Floor-to-ceiling views and a prefabricated build that ticked comfort and affordability boxes were the simple brief given to architect Nikita van Zyl of ModH Design, who collaborated with interior designer Kim Spyron of Oooh Interior Design on the project. When unpacking it, first impressions were that it was simple in design and looked easy to use. I was right. It’s straightforward and functional, and didn’t take up too much bench real estate – a big plus for me. Once my vegetables were ready to blend, I was impressed that Vitamix blenders can blend any wholefood ingredients (hot or cold) into a piping hot soup mixture within minutes.
