It’s been a good year for beautiful buildings Every year, when the entries start arriving for our Home Of The Year Awards, we put aside the usual business of making magazines and immerse ourselves in some of the best Australian homes built in the year leading up to it. Our award categories were conceived to meet what our audience is searching for when planning a brand-new build or renovation, thinking about where to include sustainable elements, choosing materials and finding inspiration for new interiors directions. So, this year, it felt right to include a new category that reflects what our audience wants – outdoor rooms. Colour is back. Homeowners are farewelling the beiges and entering an era of rich shades and vibrant designs. And what better way to incorporate it quickly, and even dramatically if that’s your thing, than with a swathe of wallpaper? Interior designer Loretta Lovecek of Sydney’s Sequence Studio says her clients are becoming braver with colour, moving beyond whites and into strong shades and statement design elements. “We are starting to see an increase in people who want to live in homes that represent them,” she explains. “A lot of our clients say, ‘I’m not here to sell my house.’ They’re not worried about resale; they want their personality in it. With a large swimming pool at the top of their wishlist, the owners of this Sydney home asked for a garden that felt both classic and a little bit exotic. Mitchell Turner of Goodmanors and his team worked with two huge existing trees, adding layers of lush planting at ground level and reconfiguring the lawn and paved dining area to be more usable. Here’s the puzzle: two large camphor laurel trees, a number of mature golden cane palms, a sloping lawn, a too-small entertaining area, and a busy family with four kids. Homeowner Courtenay and her husband had moved in over a decade ago with two small children, but their family had expanded and they wanted to spend more time at home.
