How would you describe your design ethos? Kristina O’Neal (KO): We believe in making truly connected experiences where meaning and purpose is mined in every aspect of a hospitality project. PROJECT: Naumi Hotel Auckland Airport CLIENT: Gaurang Jhunjhnuwala LOCATION: Auckland PROJECT TYPE: Hospitality FLOOR AREA: 10,500m2 ABSOLUTELY no white’ was a key directive from the client to Material Creative and Ellery Muir & Associates when they took on the refurbishment of Naumi Hotel. Not a small ask when you consider the vast, iconic hotel (originally the Grand Chancellor Hotel Auckland Airport) has over 200 suites, four conference rooms, lounge, bar, restaurant and a plethora of circulation spaces. But the unique directive is indicative of the client’s propensity to push the envelope – and perhaps of his wicked sense of humour – also charmingly evident in the redesign of the space. Associate at Space Studio This assembly of materials is about being futuristic in form and colour, while intensely tactile and warm in texture. The starting point was the new Formica, AR Touch. A few months ago, Kathie, our Laminex rep, dropped off the new product and it has a super matte surface, which is almost like a rubber tile to the touch. It’s soft and fingertips leave no trace. Surprisingly it’s also suitable for horizontal surfaces. This product promises to solve a lot of the detailing challenges we face each day. For the hotel and hospitality projects we work on, the guest needs to feel like they are the first person to ever use that space; so, little scratches and finger prints are a big challenge. Amelia Melbourne-Hayward (AMH): What are the biggest achievements the organisation has made during your tenure? Andrew Eagles (AE): We’ve spent a good amount of time asking the sector very openly about what they want and what’s important to them. We’ve made significant changes as a result – this year we are changing Homestar®; we’re bringing in new tools: Green Star – Communities and Green Star – Performance; and we’re introducing a new rating tool for existing homes next April. Some of these new changes are really significant in terms of scale. Previously, Green Star impacted on 20 to 50 buildings a year, but now Green Star – Performance allows us to go after tens of thousands of existing buildings. Sugar Lane Studio in Auckland’s North Shore suburb of Birkenhead could be seen as epitomising the modern workplace. Rather than being created for a specific mode of work, the office is highly flexible, with the capability to cater to multiple work environments and host social events. Created by Think & Shift for New Shoots Children’s Centre, which does architectural builds and high-design fit-outs for the childcare sector, the space features a long desk that allows for different users to work in an inclusive environment. PROJECT: The Lodge at the Kinloch Club CLIENTS: Southpark Corp LOCATION: Taupo DESIGN: Andrew Patterson, Virginia Fisher PROJECT TYPE: Hospitality FLOOR AREA: 1,200m2 LOCATED on the edge of Lake Taup? and with views across the revered, Jack Nicklaus-designed Kinloch Club golf course to the central plateau, Kinloch Lodge is highly exposed to wind, which funnels up the lake. The tussocky landscape and geology of the area inspired the golf course design, which in turn inspired architect Andrew Patterson to design the main building as a kind of embattlement, which appears steeped in history despite being only a year old. Stone wraps around the outside of the building, shielding it from the prevailing southerlies that come off the lake. Courtyards open to the north on the other side of the building,…

It’s Friday morning in the upper Parnell Road offices of Space Studio and there’s a friendly hum of activity in the air. The company, which specialises in hotel design, has a good number of projects on its books, both locally and in the South Pacific. They have just moved into this space from a previous office down the road. The new offices used to belong to My Food Bag and have a few remaining features, such as a full working kitchen which the food delivery company used to use for a show kitchen. Senior Associate Helen Darroch shows me around the offices, which feature clerestory windows that meet the slanted ceiling, bringing plenty of natural light into the space. PROJECT: Tara Iti Golf Club – Clubhouse CLIENTS: Tara Iti Golf Club LOCATION: Mangawhai , Northland DESIGN: Cheshire Architects, Herringbone Design (USA) PROJECT TYPE: Hospitality, Retail FLOOR AREA: 475m2 THERE is a stunning entry sequence at the clubhouse of the Tara Iti Golf Course in Mangawhai (pictured on previous page). It is a simple space yet highly considered and, in a way, synthesises some of the key design drivers that make the place so welcoming: the juxtaposition of raw and highly polished materials, the many connections between the interior and the land that surrounds it, and the need to make a high visual impact on a small site. HAPPY BOY HAPPY BOY IS THE FOURTH AND MOST RECENT VENTURE FROM A YOUNG, Auckland-based trio (Celeste Thornley and Jasper and Ludo Maignot, more on them on page 66) creating social-media-ready, inexpensive and impactful interiors made from an excellent usage of colour and graphic design. Happy Boy, which opened in July 2017, stands out from its Royal Oak neighbours by being a clean, simple, but glowing, blue box. According to Jasper, the area is “old money but with young suburbs around it. Epsom’s old money, but Onehunga has all the young parents. There was a huge gap in the market here.” As such, the interior of Happy Boy is based on pop culture references that many children of the 80s and 90s would hold dear. There are hints at classic…
