The winners of this year’s All Party Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2022 were announced at a ceremony held at Pizza Express Live, Holborn on 5 July with the recipients representing the continued strength and depth of the UK jazz scene. Knights in rusty armour! Cheeseclad! Or maybe just tragic. Here’s yet another example of a pretty good album that’s wrapped in a howler of a cover. Someone at San Francisco-based indie Monarch Records made a right royal screw-up with the artwork of this 1995 live album by esteemed pianist Cedar Walton (1934–2013). Clumsily pasting Walton, plus drummer Billy Higgins and bassist David Williams’ heads onto some Monty Python-esque armour clipart and adding a mock-medieval woodcut typeface just looks cheap ‘n’ cheesy, and hints at an art department not only lacking in imagination, flair or creativity, but also funds. What’s more, the smiling, avuncular trio look distincly unbattle-ready. The Blue Note Re:imagined series returns this autumn with a new 16-track compilation released on 30 September featuring fresh takes on music from the illustrious Blue Note vaults, recorded by an extensive line-up of hotly-tipped rising stars from the UK’s jazz, soul and R&B scenes. The Lancaster Jazz Festival returns this year for five days of live music in seven city centre spaces, running from Wednesday 7 September to Sunday 11 September. Featuring four new flagship commissions as part of the PRS Foundation-funded ‘Evolve’ series, these will spotlight emerging artists such as saxophonists Chelsea Carmichael (pictured) and Emma Johnson, drummer Jamie Sykes and guitarist Anton Hunter. Grachan Moncur III was a pioneering trombonist whose career typified the overlap of post-bop and free-jazz in the 1960s, and demonstrated the continuity between them. His father was the bassist of a swinging octet, the Savoy Sultans, that provided strong competition for bigger name-bands at Harlem’s Savoy Ballroom; he also appeared on record with Billie Holiday, Teddy Wilson and others in the mid-1930s, and with Ike Quebec in 1945. His grandfather (Grachan Moncur I) had brought the Scottish family name to the USA by emigrating from the Bahamas. After working with Ray Charles’ first big-band, Moncur first made an impact in the Art Farmer-Benny Golson Jazztet (1962) and, becoming a friend of Jackie McLean, made a total of four albums under his leadership (1963-67). The resurgent Candid Records imprint has announced the release of Live At The Detroit Jazz Festival, a star-studded recording featuring Wayne Shorter on tenor and soprano saxes, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, pianist Leo Genovese and bassist/singer Esperanza Spalding, which was taped in 2017 and is now set for release on 9 September. Not that that stopped the baritone saxophonist becoming a national treasure at home and winning DownBeat’s 1954 best newcomer award in the US. When Randal Despommier first heard Gullin’s wistful ‘Danny’s Dream’ in 2005, he identified its special quality immediately: to him, it ‘sounded like a mix between a Norse folk-song arrangement by Edvard Grieg and a Billy Strayhorn ballad’. Extensive touring revealed them to a wide audience as exceptional improvisers, with Eric Ford’s disciplined and eloquent percussion underpinning the organic interplay between Duncan Eagles nimble and surprising saxophone and Max Luthert’s richly-voiced double bass. Subsequent Whirlwind releases expanded their sonic palette, first with a string quartet (String Theory) and then with additional musicians and electronica (Cohesion). Dynamic virtuoso jazz harpist Alina Bzhezhinska is set to release her new album, Reflections, on 23 September via BBE Music. As a teenager, Mulligan wrote charts for Philly bands such as Elliott Lawrence’s, and before he was 20 joined both Gene Krupa and Claude Thornhill, playing alto. Unlike most musicians, guitarist James Kitchman felt the pandemic years were actually a blessing. As Long As Songbirds Sing, his self-released 2020 duo album with German vocalist Sylvia Schmidt garnered critical acclaim and airplay on Radio 3, and he finally pulled together his first group as leader to play and record his own compositions. The resulting Ubuntu album – appropriately called First Quartet – was released in April 2022 and immediately drew attention to this burgeoning talent. Cuddly Dudley was on the drums the night Lionel Hampton turned up at the Sunset. It was 15 October 1957, and the Vibraphone King, raising funds for Nelson Mandela and the South Africa Treason Trial defendants, was coming from the Royal Festival Hall. A year earlier, when Hampton brought his band to London, a purist-minded Johnny Dankworth challenged him from the audience, unable to relate to Hamp's gospel-church inspired rock 'n' roll; "Play some jazz!" shouted the saxophonist, thereby joining the Bob Dylan critic crying 'Judas' in the list of Brit-pop dissenters. November 2018 Australian polymath Oren Ambarchi added guitar to the 2012 album, In The Mouth – A Hand, by Swedish trio, Fire! Here, on Ghosted, he reconnects with Fire!’s rhythm section, without the input of saxophonist Mats Gustafsson. Unsurprisingly, this configuration pursues a similar fascination with hypnotic grooves but, shorn of Gustafsson’s muscular histrionics, there’s more room for the musicians to slide deeper inside and fully inhabit the somnolent zones they’re creating. There’s a nice line that says “everyone follows the bass player” – and for the likes of our cover star this month, Charles Mingus, it rings especially true. As Kevin Le Gendre points out in his incisive article, while Mingus is rightly in that circle of jazz giants which includes Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter and Sonny Rollins, that “it is arguably more appropriate to state that he broke new ground as a bandleader who played bass rather than a horn”. The war-torn Beirut of the 1980s was not an ideal environment for a young, 10 year old girl, never mind one who was identified as musically gifted, to pursue her music lessons and normal schooling. Life was lived around ceasefires, when the bombs stopped exploding and the guns stopped firing. Unstrung Rants and Stories of a Noise Guitarist Marc Ribot Akashic Books HB £16.99 Ribot is an, individualistic and risk-taking guitarist, as at home improvising with Mary Halvorson as he is laying down a film soundtrack or revelling in songs of resistance. So it’s hardly a shock that he brings all those qualities to his writing. But don’t be fooled by that sub-title: Ribot rarely ‘rants’, though he can display a righteous anger. He doesn’t let his passion dissipate his clarity of thought. The book divides into four.
