Tomorrow’s Warriors return to the Jazz Café for their big annual party, this time shining a light on the women who are shaping the current sound of London jazz with a special line-up entitled I AM WARRIOR on Saturday 26 October. The nominations for the 2024 Parliamentary Jazz Awards have been announced by the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Group (APPJG), and include a diverse selection of new and emerging UK jazz names. Supported by music licensing company PPL, which returns as event sponsors for the first time in seven years, the award categories include Vocalist, Instrumentalist, Newcomer and Album of the Year, and the prestigious Services to Jazz Award. Following the online public vote for the Awards, the shortlist was then voted upon by a selection panel, who represent a broad cross-section of backgrounds united in their passion and knowledge of jazz. Multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and arranger Shaun Martin, best known as a keyboardist for jazz-fusion giants Snarky Puppy, died on 3 August at the age of just 45. He had been under constant medical supervision after suffering a massive stroke back in April 2023. Snarky Puppy released a statement on their social media platforms announcing his death, stating: “We lost a music legend and, more importantly, a beautiful, luminous human being. Misogyny, discrimination and harassment are still everyday problems for female musicians in the UK, according to a report published in March, which found that a third of women in the music industry have been sexually harassed at work, with many reporting it as a barrier to their career; women are also eight times more likely to face discrimination than men. The findings came from the first-ever UK Musicians’ Census, conducted by the Musicians’ Union (MU) and Help Musicians. It surveyed some 6,000 music industry professionals, of whom 2,526 were women. The report said women are paid less than men, and often experience shorter careers, despite being trained to a higher level. TJ 2024 ‘EVO’ Alto Saxophone The 2024 FVO Alto saxophone from TJ (aka Trevor James), is an updated, upgraded version of the previous EVO SR model. Coming in a number of attractive finishes, we chose to look at the stunning black lacquer version. TJ makes a point of how durable the plating and lacquer is, but with the quality of manufacturing these days, you wouldn’t expect anything less. TJ has redesigned the neck, which allegedly gives better intonation and response. The natural shell pearl and abalone touch-pads add to the overall appeal of the instrument, and certainly feel good under the fingers, while the newly designed needle springs are an interesting development, as is the new pivot screw system. Many readers are aware of the gradual rise to fame of one of the most individual female musicians to date, Billie Holiday. More celebrated now than in her lifetime, her singles with small-groups in the second half of the 1930s had been picked up by young fans of the swing bands, while the 1939 recording of ‘Strange Fruit’ made her a darling of left-leaning intellectuals. But her breakthrough to a wider public began with her signing to Decca, and their 4 October 1944 session which included ‘Lover Man’. In late 1965, Alice Coltrane replaced McCoy Tyner in the John Coltrane Quartet. In the eyes of Coltrane devotees she would be held responsible – just as Yoko Ono was four years later with The Beatles – for breaking up one of the key bands of not only the era, but of all time. But in Alice Coltrane’s case (and indeed Yoko’s), nothing could have been further from the truth. A year earlier, on 9 December 1964, John Coltrane had completed A Love Supreme, on which he documented the powerful spiritual awakening he experienced following a drug overdose 10 years earlier. A matter of weeks later, the saxophonist was entering what historians now call ‘Late Period Coltrane’, where he embraced ‘New Thing’ freedom as the basis for his musical experimentation.…

Looking into his crystal ball, the sagacious jazz writer (and contributor to this august journal) John Fordham said of Alice Zawadzki in a Guardian review of her promising debut China Lane back in 2014 that she “sounds as if she might find her way to ECM one day.” A decade later and the singer-violinist-composer has duly arrived at said destination. Raised in Albany, Georgia, where Russell Malone started to play the guitar as a child, it was his move to Houston, Texas, in his late teens that got him started as a professional musician, working with the organist Al Rylander. He was 22, when, back in Atlanta in his home state, Sting came to town, and members of his backing band, including Branford Marsalis and Kenny Kirkland, sat in with Malone at a local jazz club. Rec. 2023 On his sixth album for Pi Recordings, pianist Matt Mitchell makes his concept clearwith a vividly expressive title. Zealous Angles is important because it is in the plural rather than singular, and in the context of an agile, malleable trio signals music that moves vigorously through strangely disruptive cycles. The contraction of one phrase often stands against the expansion of another, particularly when drummer Dan Weiss implies swing that abruptly curtails while bassist Chris Tordini scrambles oddly then flows evenly as Mitchell vaults through wide intervals. The result is polyrhythmic, flexi-metric but above all multi-sensation, a push to playfulness and whimsy juxtaposed with a pull to seriousness and rigour. But if…
