As we celebrate trumpeter Miles Davis’ mid-1960s resurgence in this issue, Bootleg Series producer Richard Seidel (interviewed on page 28), has recommended a great resource for fans of Davis’ and Charlie Parker’s music. This is the Miles Ahead discographical website which is devoted to the music of Davis and Parker and has been online since mid-1995 when it was founded by US discographer Peter Losin. Recently Danish discographer Jan Lohmann, author of The Sound Of Miles Davis: The Discography 1945-1991 (Copenhagen: Jazz Media ApS, 1992) added all of his Miles Davis session data from the post-retirement years (1980-1991) to the Miles Ahead database, and the site now contains details for almost 1,200 Miles Davis sessions and 226 Charlie Parker sessions. Above all, the question the drummer asks of terms such as ‘hot’ and ‘cool’ is as engaging as it is thought provoking when one considers not the apparent opposition but perhaps actual commonality between the two schools. Ahead of the jazz names being announced, the organisers have confirmed the first main stage headliner will be neo-soul superstar Maxwell – a triple Grammy winner, whose debut album Urban Hang Suite propelled him to international fame in the late 1990s. Return with us now 60 years ago as the old year of 1964 was being dragged kicking and screaming into the wild blue(s) yonder of 1965 down at The Marquee club. Owner Harold Pendleton, also head of the National Jazz Federation, had, months earlier in March, relocated the club from its Oxford Street premises around the corner to 90 Wardour Street in the heart of Soho where it embarked on its imperial phase until the late 1980s. Back in the last gasp of 1964 however, The Marquee was pushing a hip, musically rich cross-fertilisation of London’s most crucial music scenes of the time, jazz, R&B and blues, as typified by this end of year advertisement in Melody Maker. Early one November Monday morning, the media announced that one of the last true titans of 20th Century music, trumpeter-composer-arranger-band-leader-producer Quincy Jones, had died in his sleep, aged 91. Born in Chicago, with the full name of Quincy Delight Jones Jr, Jones was to become one of the most versatile and prolific arrangers, composers and bandleaders in both jazz and the wider field of popular music, as well as playing trumpet at the highest professional level. His first musical memories date from his Chicago childhood. Talking to me for the BBC World Service, he said: “Around the corner from our house was an armory where all the bands played, Earl Hines, Lunceford, and everyone. There was nobody in my family who was into music, although I used to go down…

“A true gentleman of jazz”, said fellow-saxophonist Simon Spillett, speaking of Jimmy Hastings, who died in March aged 85. “A beautifully lyrical player – his smile lit up a room”, added trumpeter Graham Russell, their tributes summing up Jimmy’s skills as an instrumentalist as well as his courteous affability. An Aberdonian by birth and proficient on tenor at sixteen, young Hastings played local gigs before moving south in 1959. There followed a bewildering array of performing assignments, his arsenal of instruments now encompassing clarinet and bass-clarinet, all the saxophones and flutes, his versatility honed on seven world cruises aboard the Southern Cross liner. The history of jazz is littered with tragedies, injustices and sad stories. But few stories are as sad as that of Beverly Kenney, a gifted singer and occasional songwriterwhose careerwas cut short at a tragically young age. And as a vocalist, she really was quite something: in a review of her superb 1959 album Born to be Blue, Allan Gilbert Jr, the editor of DownBeat magazine, said, “…she has the ability to gently, huskily slur, warp and mould her phrasing to achieve rare individuality.” So why isn’t she better known, and why is information about her so sketchy? Instead of using a studio, the Trio recorded in a panelled room, looking out over the chateau’s grounds, cloistered within a palatial space. No wonder the first track is called ‘Le Calme au Chateau’. Rec. date not stated Thumbscrew’s roots are well documented, notably the influence of Anthony Braxton both in composition and performance. But the band have increasingly developed their own group sound and ethos. Wingbeats features even more of Fujiwara’s vibraphone which first came to the fore with 2022’s Multicolored Midnight. ‘Irreverent Grace’ finds the vibes spinning spells against Halvorson’s simply strummed chords while Formanek leads on warm toned bass. Halvorson herself plays cleaner and simpler as has been her style increasingly over recent years. There are still those tonal gyres and gimbals, but in their sparser use they hit all the bolder. Oscar Peterson Trio: Exclusively For My Friends, Vol. V – Mellow Mood (MPS 1968) We’ve covered the legendary MPS label many times in Jazzwise, but of the German imprint’s many recordings, surely the best-known and most-loved are the six (seven if you count the Lost Tapes set) albums made by Oscar Peterson in his Exclusively For My Friends series. These were recorded live on vintage Telefunken gear by MPS founder-owner Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer for MPS at private concerts with a small audience at his home studio, situated in his villa. London-based, Canadian-born trumpeter Jay Phelps has curated a new show which brings together the best of Miles Davis’ repertoire from 1958 and 1959. He’ll be leading the band with his own virtuosic trumpet playing alongside a talented line-up of alto saxophonist Donovan Hafner, tenor saxophonist Maddy Coombs, pianist Rick Simpson, bassist James Owston and drummer Jim Bashford. Prior to the release of Kind of Blue, the best-selling jazz album of all time (to date it’s shifted more than five million copies worldwide), Miles was busy in the studio, working with the same lineup of musicians: Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. In 1958, the year before Kind of Blue, the album called ’58 Miles was released and set the stage for the birth…

“I like to play in Europe every now and then,” said Miles Davis to Playboy magazine in 1962, “But I don’t like to spend more time out of this house than I can help.” He also spoke of spending more time with his children and his wife Frances. Davis was taking a spot of what today would be called 'gardening leave'. What was not made public was that Miles was suffering from sickle-cell anaemia, which had given him pain for years, and which had recently flared up again. After the breakup of his great sextet that included John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans, Davis’s career seemed to have reached a plateau. A few months after recording My Funny Valentine and ‘Four’ & More, George Coleman left Davis’ quintet. This was the stuff of legend, and I have heard/read many explanations for this. We know that prior to forming this band, Davis was enduring considerable pain from sickle-cell anaemia which appears to have continued through the duration of this band’s lifetime; and at the time, Coleman found himself fronting the band at bookings where Davis could not show up. Rec. 26 June 1970 By the time this was recorded, Evans had been working with Eddie Gomez for the best part of four and a half years, and the empathy between them is well established. Not only does Gomez use the whole range of the instrument in his lines behind the piano, but such is the trust between them that Evans frequently opens up more space than hitherto, for him to take extended bass solos, which mix dexterous speed and lyricism. He belongs to the same order of excellence as Trane, Ornette and Mingus, with whom he made groundbreaking music. This biography is thus topical and, more importantly, as illuminatingly detailed as it is engagingly readable.
