YES, WHITE KITCHENS ARE CLASSIC. But sometimes they can feel cold or just plain boring. Designer Laura Ulam’s white kitchen is decidedly neither. By layering color variations, textures, and a mix of metals, the designer deftly infused warmth and personality into her home’s hub—without straying from her preferred less-is-more palette. Laura, who works with Courtney Heaton Designs, admits being a serial remodeler who loves the excitement of the construction process. I’ve come across many small kitchens that make a mighty big impression thanks to careful layout planning, thoughtful details, clever storage, and eye-catching materials. IT WAS THE LOCATION, not the layout, that sold Jennifer and Lenny Hochschild on this 66-year-old home in the San Francisco Bay area. The large tree-lined lot off ered plenty of space for gardening and gathering outdoors. Indoors, a to-thestuds makeover was the solution for everything else. Architectural designer and project manager Jen Tidwell had the job of fitting in everything the Hochschilds were looking for in a kitchen: an efficient, open layout that accommodates both cooks and kids, a combination snack bar and baker’s island, professional appliances, flooring that will take abuse and require little care, and a bright, modern farmhouse vibe. “SHE WANTED THIS ROOM TO REFLECT A CERTAIN SENSUAL SOPHISTICATION—Old Hollywood glam mixed with a little Marie Antoinette,” says designer Krista Watterworth Alterman of the client who hired her to design the 400-squarefoot master bath she shares with her husband in their Parkland, Florida, home. The goal was to create an elegant, inviting space that would read like a timeless love story—a reflection of the couple’s own old-fashioned romance. Deep-tissue massages and exfoliating facials aside, the master bath in interior designer Brooke Wagner’s Newport Beach, California, home imparts a similarly serene atmosphere. “I wanted the design to feel very organic and spa-like with lots of texture and natural stone,” Brooke says. Completed in 2017, the home is defined by lofty windows and plenty of natural light. To bring similar luminosity to the 180-square-foot bath, twin angled skylights in the 13-foot vaulted ceiling catch the morning sun in the east on one side and meet it on the other as the day advances.
