AT THE PLANNING MEETING FOR THIS NEW KITCHEN near McLean, Virginia, words like rustic, simple, and bright were flying around, along with a sheaf of inspiration photographs. But kitchen designer J. Paul Lobkovich was thinking from the ground up. His question: What’s the flooring going to be? It sounds like an unusual starting point, but Lobkovich relies on it for almost every project. “It tells a lot about the personality of the home,” he says. His clients, a young couple with four small children, chose French oak plank flooring marked with divots and worn spots—the easier to hide wear and tear. “It was warm, homey, not too finished,” Lobkovich says, and it helped him focus in on a farmhouse-inflected design. So when architect Dan Garber designed the 200-square-foot master bathroom of his clients’ Silicon Valley home, the operative word was tranquility. He went back to basics with earthy materials, straight lines, and unfussy forms and presented them against a warm, neutral backdrop. “The concept of Old World meets New World was a driving force behind the design of the entire home, but particularly in the master bathroom,” Garber says. “The stone, wood, and tile that we selected are rugged, and some are even reclaimed or antique. The home is actually a customized preengineered metal barn with a corrugated metal roof—the type that is ubiquitous in rural communities like the one outside College Station, Texas, where homeowner Natalie McGehee built this getaway for her family. “I wanted a gathering place for my family for football weekends and birthdays,” she says, “but it had to be tough.” That was especially true for the kitchen, which anchors the large, open living space. HOW MUCH SPACE IS TOO MUCH IN A BATHROOM? That was the question designer Cher Beall faced in her own home in Menlo Park, California, where the master bath was so roomy it felt cavernous and cold. “To be honest, I think the bath is disproportionately large for the surrounding spaces. I’d rather have closet space for cute shoes,” Cher says with a laugh. Cute-shoe storage needs aside, it didn’t make sense to move walls or fixtures because the house, built just 15 years ago by previous owners, was in excellent shape.
