Nothing compares to a summer spent at the pool. As a child who grew up smack dab in the center of the contiguous United States (going to the ocean was out of the question), I practically lived at my neighborhood pool every summer. From morning swimming lessons to friendly afternoon water games to relaxing evenings with my family, most days were filled with the smell of chlorine, buying Fun Dip with spare change, and balancing scorching sunshine with cannonballs into the bracingly cold water. Intarsia is a method for working blocks of color without carrying the unused color(s) across the back of the work (as you would for stranded knitting). With intarsia, you can only work in a certain direction, because the yarn is left at the end of the block (Figure 1). Intarsia is usually worked back and forth in rows because the yarn for each color block is waiting at the correct place on the next row. When working in the round, the yarn for any given color block is at the far end of the block, where it was left at the end of the previous round. Unlike stranded knitting, intarsia does not have yarn floats across the wrong side, so there’s no worry about keeping tension even or avoiding puckering. Instead, each section of color has its own yarn supply. Regardless of the number of colors involved, intarsia is much easier to knit than it looks. After all, it’s just basic stockinette stitch!
