Dave Bryant makes his art from a very unique vantage point; he is profoundly colour blind. Dave started Dougie by tracing the basic outline from a photo. He didn't want to create a highly realistic painting but instead wanted something he could be a bit more expressive with. For this he split the colour into blocks rather than painting individual hairs. Dave then finalised the more important details such as the eyes and fur lines which help to make the subject more recognisable. Hilary Pearce is an experimental artist interested in learning a wide range of artistic media. A new exhibition this autumn at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of Birmingham, promises to be a delight for the senses – both visual and olfactory when ‘Scent & the Art of the Pre-Raphaelites’ opens on 11 October. The link between scent and memory, and that certain smells can instantly evoke strong emotions and recollections, has long been recognised. For the Victorians, sensory details in paintings were thought to be able to trigger a variety of visceral responses: a still life of flowers might prompt the viewer to believe they could smell the blooms. Naomi Jenkin is a renowned pet portrait and wildlife artist, celebrated for her ability to capture the personality and soul of her subjects. Specialising in highly realistic pet portraits, Naomi meticulously hand draws each piece using only the finest art materials. Reflections of white boats always look beautiful as they stretch, shimmer and oscillate in the water. However, rarely will a watercolour artist create them with white paint. Paler watercolour pigments do not have the opacity to cover darker paint. Furthermore, trying to paint white paint over a layer of darker paint will result in a muddy colour, as the water in the white paint will re-wet the darker layer underneath, causing them to blend together. Therefore, creating white reflections in watercolour poses quite a challenge to the watercolour artist, so it’s a case of looking for some alternative methods. The range of Edding Acrylic Paint Pens comprise 26 highly pigmented, water-based coloured pens, which are low-odour and lightfast. They are easy to use, and clean to work with on paper and canvas, enabling the widest range of creative expression, limited only by your own imagination. Activating the pens is simple: first shake with the tip facing down then gently pump the tip on a piece of paper to encourage the ink flow. While the pens are suitable for many supports, I found paper and canvas the two I favoured. Most paper weights and surfaces are suitable, and I first selected one of my favourites, Hahnemühle Bamboo Mixed Media paper, to work on, and chose two brush sizes of 2/3mm and the wider 5/10mm widths. ‘The Reflected Self: Portrait Miniatures, 1550-1850’ will be on show at Compton Verney from 21 September to 23 February 2025. This exhibition presents the fascinating history of the intricate art of painting in miniature by many of the leading miniature painters to have worked in Britain, from Nicholas Hilliard, Isaac Oliver and Samuel Cooper to Richard Cosway, John Smart and George Engleheart. Draw the lower half of the circle that is the central disc then add petals. Some of the petals especially at the top left should invade the central disc so you cannot see the complete circle. On a recent visit to a garden centre, I was amazed by the selection of eye-catching pansies on display. I decided to buy the purple and yellow variety for this painting, as they provide a perfect example of how complementary colours enhance each other when placed together. And although they are small and delicate flowers, they are not only striking in colour, but also intresting in their characteristics and detailing. Characteristics I like to analyse the subject before beginning to establish the best approach to a painting, and often find that simplifying it can be effective. 1 Variegated wash background Colours merge together when applied to a wet surface. Here I used transparent yellow, followed by cobalt blue and a green mix of the two colours combined. This combination of colours will flow together giving a subtle and harmonious base. When other colours are introduced, as in the area around the flowerheads, be aware that yellow and green shades can become muddy when pink or mauve shades overlap, so use contrasting colours sparingly. 2 Negative painting technique The variegated tone of the background wash provides the base tone for the leaves. To emphasise the leaf shapes, paint the negative spaces surrounding them, wet on dry. Run a loaded brush of a green mix around the edge of the leaves and diffuse with water. Different shades of green…
