Thank you to Chris Lloyd for the entertaining article comparing Test cricket and classical music [in the August issue of Limelight]. As a lover of classical music, especially Wagner and Der Ring des Nibelungen, and as a committed Test cricket supporter, I have also often pondered on their similarities. I would like, however, to add my third obsession to these, which is Alpine trekking. All three last for a number of days and all three can have long passages of struggle, with little apparent progress. Take for instance Wotan’s retelling of his life story, a soporific afternoon session with no wickets, or a long viewless climb up the side of a misty mountain.
