Q ‘The tractor just pulled out’ I was out on my Ninja on a country road riding at about 50 to 60mph when a tractor with a trailer exited a road to my left just after a gentle bend. It continued into the road. I assumed the driver would see me and realised I could not brake in time so I attempted to go around the front of it. The gap was closing and I collided with it. The police officer investigating the accident has placed blame on me, seemingly ignoring that the tractor pulled out into my path. I don’t think I was to blame as I was not exceeding the speed limit. The Jersey International Motoring Festival on June 5-8 is the largest motoring event in the Channel Islands, run through the Classic and Vintage Motor Racing Club of Jersey. I have been invited to ride an HRC-kitted Honda NSR250, plus a Suzuka 8-Hours HRC RVF750 Lucky Strike, together with Leon Haslam, who will be reunited with his 2007 Airways Ducati 999R BSB machine. ‘Big bang for your buck’ Whichever way you look at it, the T1002VX is a lot of bike for the money. Even when you add the set of aluminium luggage at £499, it’ll still only set you back £8698 with all the bells and whistles included that’ll leave you wanting for nothing – unless you’re expecting the full-throated thrill associated with a big V-twin. Yes, it’s playful enough for fun on the twisty stuff (just), and feels like it will eat motorways, but try to crack on and it runs out of oomph. Running costs are worth bearing in mind too, as Morbidelli stipulate a 3000-mile service interval while only offering a two-year warranty. What are my options? There are only two ‘traditional’ supersport bikes for sale in the UK – the £10,999 Honda CBR600RR and the £10,775 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R (which is 636cc). Yamaha’s R6 Race costs £13,000 but is track-only. When it comes to spec, the Honda is the closest to the Panigale and R9 as it has an angle-responsive element to its electronics, which the Ninja lacks. On the road you are instantly reminded just why the supersport class has fallen out of favour when you ride the CBR. The inline-four might make a genuine 108bhp, which is comparable with the R9 (107.8bhp) and Panigale (109.8bhp), but its hunger for revs lets the side down. If you’re wondering how not to look after your scooter, take note. Mark Stanford, owner of Mark1 Motorcycles in Edinburgh, has seen his fair share of rubber-related shockers, but the state of this Honda Silver Wing’s rear tyre still took him by surprise. “The chap had ridden it on a flat tyre and the rim had cut through the metal carcass of the tyre,” Stanford explained. “So, all that was holding the tyre together was just the rubber itself.” To make matters worse, the rider didn’t slow down - he actually sped up after realising he had a flat. “When he’d noticed it had almost no air in the tyre, he’d sped up to get home quick,” says Stanford. Well it was good to get the Superbike race under my belt and I needed it because practice week has been tough. I’ve been racing here since 1996 and I wasn’t feeling it, with all the damp patches and I’ll hold my hand up… I was feeling a bit scared. ‘R9 really delivers’ Ducati will always claim that their bikes can command a premium because of their exclusivity and residuals, but when you look at the numbers, the Panigale V2 S simply doesn’t do enough to justify the £5472 it will cost you like-for-like over the R9. Yes, it has flashy Öhlins suspension, but that’s about its only real selling point and in many areas, the spec of the Yamaha actually trumps that of the Ducati. That said, if you want a Ducati sportsbike, the stock Panigale V2 (£15,171) model is almost close enough in price (especially on PCP) to make it justifiable. The 2003 Ducati 999s used in this week’s How To has only done 2600 miles since new and is in fantastic condition. As you’d expect from such a low-mileage bike, it’s a bit of a garage queen, residing under a soft, red cover, and is only used about a dozen times a year. However, the last time it was ridden it started to malfunction, bogging down and cutting out when the throttle was fully opened. The double-D is easy to fit, tightens just right and takes up less room. The ratchet is easy to use but does not tighten just right and takes up more space. Racers have to wear the double-D, so the design must be safer. I’ve heard it said that you can fasten a ratchet with your gloves on, but why? BRUCE DUNN MCN’s expert technician Fuelling success Keep the petrol flowing freely by servicing your bike’s fuel system BRUCE’S TIPS The container you’re siphoning into should be lower than the tank 1 Empty the tank Often forgotten about, your bike’s fuel system has various parts that are serviceable, such as the filter, quick-release couplings and fuel lines. Most bikes will have a fuel pump located inside the petrol tank that you’ll need to access to service, so first drain as much fuel out as possible, preferably using a pump/siphon. 2 Unclip wires and hoses Loosen any fasteners that secure the tank, then check the workshop manual for instructions on how to disconnect the fuel lines, breathers and electrical connectors; these all should come away easily once the retaining plate has been taken…
