A KOREAN shipping company is suing the South African Weather Service for not issuing a warning of severe weather in time. The bad weather resulted in the company’s vessel breaking loose from where it was moored at Durban harbour and colliding with another vessel. In papers issued in the Durban High Court, the Korea Shipping Corporation is claiming millions in damages, following the damage to both vessels. It was in 2017 when there was severe weather in the Port of Durban and the vessel, SM New York, broke free of her mooring at her berth at the container terminal. The other vessel, MSC Ines, also broke free of its mooring and the ships collided. The plaintiffs are Korea Shipping Corporation, the bareboat charterer of SM New York and the owner…

MATRIC pupils, who complained that there was a problem with a question on Maths Paper 2 which was written last week, say the exam papers should be properly checked before they are released for the exams. An apparent error in Maths Paper 2 has sparked an outcry as teachers and pupils allege something was wrong with question 5, which was a trigonometry question for seven marks. An electric helicopter with multiple rotors took its first flight in conventional air traffic near Paris last week as it prepares for commercial flights from 2024. The Volocopter test aircraft – resembling a large drone with eight rotors – took off with a passenger on board from the Pontoise-Cormeilles airfield outside Paris and circled around while other aircraft were in the vicinity. German company Volocopter CEO Dirk Hoke said that in the next 18 months it will prepare its craft for certification. Following the release of the Khampepe Commission of Inquiry report into racism at Stellenbosch University (SU), the university in partnership with Nelson Mandela University and Bath University will host a Race and Transformation in Higher Education Conference this week. The conference will take place from today until Thursday. The Khampepe Commission, led by retired Justice Sisi Khampepe, released its 184-page report last week. SU rector and vice-chancellor Professor Wim de Villiers requested the independent, external commission of inquiry following two incidents in May, with the commission formally commencing its work on June 13. Some police officers have to work in the dark and face the risk of attacks during load shedding as a total of 72 police stations across the country are without functioning emergency generators. This was revealed by Police Minister Bheki Cele when responding to written parliamentary questions from DA MP Okkie Terblanche. Terblanche wrote to Cele enquiring about the number of police stations in each province that were not equipped with emergency generators. He also wanted to know the impact this had on policing. A LEGAL team has been established, composed of crime and civil litigation experts led by Lawyers for Human Rights and an Eastern Cape law firm to assist the families and survivors of the Enyobeni Tavern tragedy. South Africa was left grieving when 21 teenagers died during the tavern tragedy in June. The legal team will, in conjunction with the families and other stakeholders, decide whether to initiate litigation to ensure that justice is done, said Professor Lulama Ntshingwa of the South African Council of Churches in the Eastern Cape. THE proposal by the Department of Basic Education that encourages schools to install unisex toilets fails to recognise that the priority for the majority of impoverished schools is to eliminate pit toilets. In an attempt to be more inclusive and move away from gender norms in order to accommodate transgender and non-binary children, the Education Department has made a controversial proposal that calls, among other things, for the building of “genderless or unisex toilets and change rooms”. The guidelines are not restricted to unisex toilets as they also seek to encourage teachers to avoid gender segregating, by splitting classes, lines, or groups into “boys and girls”. PURPLE Group’s headline earnings a share fell by 74.3% to 1.14 cents in the year to August 31, after operating expenses increased 38.1% as it grew the business. The increase in overall costs was even though the cost to serve clients reduced by 16%. Group operating expenses came to R213 million. Chief executive Charles Savage said in a letter the costs included about R20m to integrate new partners such as Discovery Bank, Telkom and the new Southeast Asia partner. In my years of ministry I’ve seen a lot of death and attended many funerals. I’ve ridden in the hearse, often for kilometres, and chatted with funeral directors about all sorts of things and then arrived at a graveside to help a mom and dad remain steady to drop farewell petals into graves. FINANCE Minister Enoch Godongwana has shot down a request to form a panel of experts to determine whether to increase the list of zero-rated food items. This comes after the DA made the request two months ago. The official opposition has been pushing for an extended basket of food items to be zero-rated from VAT and asked that the proposal be subjected to expert analysis. The DA proposed that the list should include chicken, beef, tin beef, margarine, peanuts, baby food, tea, coffee and soup powder. In September, Godongwana told the oral question session in the National Assembly that “if a proposal is ‘am I prepared to subject the items to an expert analysis, the answer will be yes’”. In the latest Infrastructure Report Card (IRC) by the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (Saice), the overall condition of South Africa’s infrastructure has scored a D. The scorecard is based on a five-point scale – A (world-class), B (fit for the future), C (satisfactory for now), D (at risk of failure), and E (unfit-for-purpose) – and features a snapshot of the current condition and performance of 32 sub-sectors of infrastructure. The eThekwini Municipality said 200 new metro police recruits joined the city this month, while a further 200 are expected to start early in 2023. Yesterday, the city said the new recruits would undergo a 10-week training programme. UTHUKELA District Municipality in Ladysmith has revealed that it suspects its workers sabotaged its infrastructure, leaving thousands of people without water for days, in order to force the municipality to approve overtime work. The community of Ezakheni Township outside Ladysmith were without water for several days after the valves that allow water to be pumped into the township and other suburbs were closed and vandalised. The vandalism of infrastructure came to light a few months ago. UThukela mayor Inkosi Ntandoyenkosi Shabalala said they suspected that the vandalism was linked to demands for overtime.
