While every design project is a unique endeavor, there’s something especially freeing about being able to realize your truest vision without having to make compromises. For this issue, we invited some of the most celebrated designers and industry professionals, from all around the world, to open up their homes to us—and you. INTERIOR DESIGNER CHRIS BARRETT has long understood how to live large in a small space. In fact, she has always preferred to occupy smaller spaces. With two grown children launched and established in their own careers, she’s consolidated and curated her possessions in a charming southern California bungalow, making maximum use of her space—and her innate design talents. The bungalow is located in Mar Vista, a quiet inland town on Los Angeles’s West Side. Min Hogg Min Hogg was the founder and the editor for twenty years of The World of Interiors magazine, one of the most novel and influential design publications covering the industry. She recently designed and launched her extensive SeaWeed collection of wallpapers. Also, Min was awarded a decoration by the Queen of England for her services to the design industry. Penny Morrison Penny Morrison began her interior design business thirty-five years ago, adding textile design—with her own range of hand printed linens made in England—nine years ago. We all live with things in our homes. Beyond the actual furniture on which we sit and sleep, those objects we collect—flower vases and throw pillows, Oriental rugs and painted bowls—often assume a function other than just practical. What we admire as decorative also influences how we live daily at home, something that seasoned interior designers have long known. This is a dynamic, too, that the artist/collagist Henri Matisse (1869–1954) recognized and which is celebrated in a landmark show now on view at London’s Royal Academy of Art (August 5–November 12, after having debuted at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). E very job has its hazards. For Hattie Newman, it’s paper cuts.
