Up to 15 million people in the UK alone face digital accessibility issues when they use websites from many leading organisations. It’s a huge problem, as evidenced by new Ovum research that found over 815,600 WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) on Fortune 100 companies. From our experience, over 94 per cent of websites globally are failing basic disability accessibility checks and have been for some time. It’s becoming an expensive problem. During 2018 in the US, over 5,000 lawsuits were filed against companies for non-compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). European companies are also targeted, as evident in the case brought against Scandinavian Airlines for ADA non-compliance. They are not alone. Skeuomorphism. Was it really that bad and can it exist alongside minimalism? That’s the burning question. First of all, no, skeuomorphism wasn’t that bad. In fact, in terms of usability, it offered far more clarity than any other visual aesthetic and also made UI design feel more meaningful.
