HAVING A BALL SOCCER GOES SKYWARD I magine a soccer game in the sky! A new skyscraper is set for construction in the Middle Eastern city of Dubai. And the building’s design has a very special feature: a soccer field on the roof! According to the current plans, the field will be surrounded by tall barriers to keep wayward balls from flying over the edge. WHAT: Fire Fusion—a “smart” fire detector. WHY: Current fire detectors sense smoke, but they can’t tell if the smoke is coming from an actual fire. Fatima wanted to take fire detecting a step further! HOW: She coded multiple sensors to detect not only smoke but also flame, heat, and motion. And if her fire detector senses fire, it sends an alert to a phone. For her prototype, she attached all the sensors to a birdhouse, tested the device, and reprogrammed it again and again until it worked. OWL: What inspired you to do this project? Ever wish you could see a woolly mammoth in real life? Or hear the call of a dodo bird? It might seem like science fiction, but the idea of bringing back extinct animals might not be so far-fetched. Scientists are studying ways to bring back animals that disappeared from Earth long ago. This idea is called de-extinction. But the process isn’t as easy as hitting Undo on a keyboard. Scientists would need DNA from the extinct animal and a closely related species in order to “rebuild” the animal. It’s complicated work, and it sparks many opinions. Some people think bringing back extinct species could help balance the environment. In some areas, there aren’t enough predators to control animal populations.
