On May 19, 1977, 20-year-old Colleen Stan decided to hitchhike to a friend's birthday party about 400 miles away from her Eugene, Ore., home. She was about 100 miles from her destination when she accepted a ride from Cameron and Janice Hooker, a couple with a baby. It would prove to be a fateful decision. The Hookers abducted her and held her captive in Red Bluff, Calif., for more than seven years. For much of that time she was locked in a box under their bed, released only to be raped, beaten and tortured. Stan, now 59, eventually escaped and rebuilt her life.
