I hope this June issue finds you well! Often, when I write my letter to you for this page, there’s a slight disconnect in the weather outside the window, and what I imagine you are experiencing when you read this (print magazines being what they are, we are always working a little way ahead). But today, the sun is shining and it’s actually quite warm, so I’m finding it a lot easier to bring those summer days to mind! I’m always excited to start work on a new issue, and find some exciting recipes to share with you all. Tips for acid reflux What is acid reflux? A painful indicator of indigestion, acid reflux creates a burning sensation in the chest after eating, leading to its common name: heartburn. The pain results from stomach acid rising up the throat. Occasional acid reflux is nothing to be alarmed about, but regular bouts should be discussed with your GP. A report by The Vegan Society has revealed that a large number of Brits are considering vegan food for their companion animals. With around 60 per cent of UK households sharing their homes with animals, 1 in 5 of those with cats said that they had purchased vegan cat food, while almost half (49 per cent) said that they would be interested in purchasing it in the future. For those with dogs, 24 per cent said that they had purchased vegan food previously, and 45 per cent revealed they were interested in it. Dating app Veggly (veggly.net), developed specifically for vegans and vegetarians looking for love, has reported a ‘large surge’ of thousands of users switching their profiles from ‘vegetarian’ to ‘vegan’, in the wake of a BBC Panorama episode called A Cow’s Life: The True Cost of Milk. Data compiled from Veggly’s 60,000+ users reveals that 35 per cent of the UK’s vegetarian users switched to ‘vegan’ since the episode aired in February, with additional requests that a new sub-category of ‘dairy free’ be added to the platform. How long have you been vegan, and what made you make the change? After first being vegetarian for several years, I went vegan nearly twenty years ago after spending time in California. Despite fierce competition from the county’s farmers, including television presenter Jeremy Clarkson, Oxfordshire County Council (oxfordshire.gov.uk) voted in favour of serving plant-based meals at meetings and civic events.
