There’s just something about cooking outside that feels like summer, and we vegans are now so lucky that we don’t have to compromise at all. Whether you’re stocking up on meat replacements, or grilling veggies, you definitely don’t need to go hungry this BBQ season! A pungent root vegetable, horseradish is most often used as a condiment, though has also traditionally been used as a medicine. In the UK it is often consumed as a sauce, made from grated horseradish root and vinegar. Many branded sauces contain egg, making them unsuitable for vegans. Tewkesbury mustard is a blend of mustard and grated horseradish, and is mentioned by Shakespeare in Henry IV Part 2 by Falstaff. A life cycle evaluation used to determine environmental impacts, including indicators for climate impact and land use, has revealed that switching to plant-based cheese could lower your associated climate impact by at least 50 per cent. The research, carried out by sustainability consultancy Quantis (quantis.com), found that popular dairy cheese varieties such as cheddar, mozzarella, feta and parmesan yield between 6.4 and 13.4kog carbon dioxide (eq) per kilo over their life cycle. By comparison, the climate impacts of Violife vegan alternatives to dairy cheese are substantially lower, and create at least 3.7kg less carbon dioxide per kilo: the equivalent to driving a car almost seven miles. Atrio of Harvard studies that followed more than 100,000 women for more than a decade found that those consuming the most anthocyanins – the brightly coloured pigments found in blueberries, strawberries, and other berries – had an 8 per cent reduction in risk of developing high blood pressure. Great, but how many berries? How long have you been vegan, and what made you make the change? My journey to veganism was not linear. I first went vegan 20 years ago along with my mum and sister after connecting the dots between the dairy and meat industries. Unfortunately, in my early 20s, I was very isolated and disconnected and started to have eggs and dairy when eating out to ‘fit in’ and felt extremely guilty as I was not living in line with my values.
