Bloating is a result of swelling, from excess food or gas in the intestine. There are many triggers, from what and how we eat, through to the balance of our gut bacteria and even the speed at which food travels through our system.
Occasional bloating is common and isn’t usually a cause for concern. However, if it’s persistent, bloating could signal an issue with your digestion, such as constipation, a food intolerance, coeliac disease or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
