Stuckfish formed in 2017 when old schoolfriends Adrian Fisher and Philip Stuckey reconnected over coffee and decided to make music together. The result was the critically acclaimed Calling, released in 2018: a blend of storytelling and melodic rock with a prog twist. Hard-rocking prog veterans Atomic Rooster have announced the release of their first studio album in over four decades. Circle The Sun will be available on CD via Esoteric on October 10. Led by singer-guitarist Steve‘Boltz’ Bolton, who joined the band in 1971 as a replacement for John Du Cann, the new line-up also includes Adrian Gautrey (keyboards and vocals), Shugg Millidge (bass) and drummer Paul Everett. According to the band, the new album“channels the spirit of 1971 album Death Walks Behind You.” Atomic Rooster were formed in 1969 by keyboardist Vincent Crane and drummer Carl Palmer after the pair quit The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown while touring the US. Begun in 2017 as a solo effort by guitarist, bassist and keyboardist Maciej Zamczała in the central Polish town of Inowrocław, HiPoKaMP Projekt soon expanded into a duo after attracting the attention of his former Polish language teacher and drummer Łukasz Oliwkowski, who’d already been playing in Riverside guitarist Maciej Meller’s acoustic side-project Zenith. And with every subsequent release, HiPoKaMP Projekt have seen the steady expansion of their line-up. “We were joined by keyboardist Zbigniew Florek for our third album Futurocklogia,” explains Zamczała. “He was already famous in the prog world with the band Quidam and playing with Colin Bass from Camel. Peter and I have been involved in “Pthese Atmos mixes, which has been quite fun,” Tony Banks told Prog in January, just ahead of the original release date for The Lamb box set in March. Now, at least two release dates later, the set will finally arrive at the end of September. “Hall Of The Mountain Grill is the best studio album I did with Hawkwind. I was quite to the front.” Lemmy At the start of 1974, Hawkwind were still very much a band on the up. They’d just completed their first North American tour, with thousands of stateside fans attending every show, and on returning home had immediately embarked on The Ridiculous Roadshow, playing to sold-out concert halls around the UK. Dave Brock told the NME it was so named “because all our tours are just so silly and disorganised”, but they’d become a serious force to be reckoned with in the British rock world since the success of Silver Machine in 1972. Kjetil Nordhus has one piece of advice for anyone trying to make three albums at the same time: don’t. “I wouldn’t recommend it,” the singer of Norwegian prog rockers Green Carnation admits, the exhaustion almost audible in his voice. “I’m 50 this year and over the last, say, 10 years, I’ve learned the difference between something being 97% good and 100% good. In the progressive rock map of the USA, Detroit in the great state of Michigan rarely features. Think of Detroit, and you’re far more likely to link it with Motown and the car industry. But another significant export since 1987 is Discipline. The Blue Nowhere INSIDEOUTMUSIC  Expect the unexpected from prog metal’s merriest tricksters. Prog metal, showtunes and a level of absurdity that may well exceed the recommended daily dose can all be found within Between The Buried And Me’s 11th studio album. The Blue Nowhere finds them trimmed down to a four-piece, after rhythm guitarist Dustie Waring was ejected when allegations of sexual misconduct emerged on social media. However, there’s no evidence of a slimmer sound and the band sound as musically diverse as they’ve ever been. If BTBAM were Advanced Dungeons & Dragons characters, their alignment would be Chaotic Good, wilfully breaking all the rules with the best of intentions. “There’s a proclivity for cramming contrasting ideas together.” Progressive metalcore remains at their foundation, with growled vocals and heavy guitars…

 1492: Conquest Of Paradise RHINO Greek synthesiser genius’s ostentatious and sometimes overwrought score. Ridley Scott’s 1992 historical epic 1492: Conquest Of Paradise was a box office turkey and critical flop; the liberties it took with the story of its subject, the explorer and brutal coloniser Christopher Columbus, haven’t held up well either. In turn, the soundtrack by Vangelis barely got a mention when the obituaries were written on the synth wizard’s passing in 2022, though that didn’t stop original versions fetching an arm and a leg on Discogs. “Its stronger moments are offset by music that hasn’t aged well.” This reissue at least mitigates any financial concerns that anyone who wants to own a physical copy might have. After its sold-out comeback last year, Barcelona’s intimate showcase, Be Prog! My Friend, is back on September 26-27 with “the best possible line-up”. The festival in Catalonia’s sun-soaked capital was resurrected after a six-year slumber and its reconfigured guise worked a treat. It’s moved to a smaller, but wonderfully quirky, corner of Poble Espanyol, the open-air museum that knots together streets and buildings inspired by a rich history of Spanish culture and architecture. Previous headliners have included Steven Wilson, Jethro Tull, and Steve Hackett and this year’s line-up has been carefully curated to showcase a diverse selection of acts from across the prog spectrum. “Be Prog! reflects my musical tastes,” says chief organiser Juan Antonio Muñoz. “It’s nice to show different kinds of artists.” With that, he wants to surprise.…

Rick Wakeman has been telling Prog about Melancholia, his first-ever set of self-penned solo piano pieces, which is out on October 17 via Madfish. The pieces are the result of his daily dalliances on the ivories and the moods they can often express. “I sit at the piano every day,” he says, “and sometimes things are happening which affect the way I play. Melancholy is an emotion, and not necessarily a bad one. Norwegian art-rockers Gazpacho are set to return with their first LP in half a decade. Magic 8-Ball, released on October 31 via Kscope, is a concept album consisting of what keyboard player Thomas Andersen calls eight“short stories about people who find themselves in extraordinary situations.” The album’s title is taken from the spherical toy that offers up a set of random phrases every time it’s shaken – a reference to the album’s overall theme. “It’s about the randomness of life,” says Andersen. “Each story is about a roll of the dice. You could say the people in the songs are victims of randomness.” Things could have been very different. Genesis’s sixth long-player, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway was a complex, dense double album about Rael, a Puerto Rican street punk, with a troubled gestation; the accompanying concerts were intended to be a theatrical tour de force. The entire enterprise would have proved challenging as it was, but then Peter Gabriel handed in his notice a few dates into the tour. There’s something unusual in the water over in Scandinavia; it continues to excel as a hotbed of musical creativity. Sweden’s Gaupa have already staked their claim in recent years as one of the area’s hottest free-thinking exports, and their current release is likely to cement their place in the progosphere further. It’s only a mini-album, but Fyr packs a powerful punch, and it’s perhaps all the more impressive given it comes after the quartet had to press the restart button when guitarist Daniel Nygren called it quits last year. It’s worth remembering that between the release of 1971’s Fragile and 1974’s Relayer, Yes had steadily risen from plucky progressive rock hopefuls to become bona fide superstars, selling millions of albums around the globe and effortlessly filling increasingly larger arenas around North America and Europe. “Stylistically, it has more in common with American soft rock.” With relationships inevitably souring due to clashing egos and the financial imperative to keep the cash cow rolling along, the idea of enabling every bandmember to record a solo album could be viewed either as a cunning managerial sleight of hand designed to let off some creative steam outside of the parent band, or a collective act of hubris. Its lavish double staircase and ornate velvet curtains transport the audience from an unsuspecting pub to a big top, as primed for amateur wrestling and drag cabaret as it is for live music. Musically, Whimsical Creature match the venue’s decadence. Pieces like The Stargazer and A Journey Of Five Lifetimes are unapologetically proggy, filled with unpredictable time signature changes and chord sequences so sophisticated that they sometimes abandon tonality altogether. Five years since the passing of their leader Tim Smith – partially paralysed after a stroke and heart attack in 2008 – British art-prog ensemble Cardiacs have regrouped to finish their long-awaited double LP titled LSD, due out on September 19 via Alphabet Business Concern LSD’s recordings were begun by guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and producer Smith in 2007. Smith’s bandmates Craig Fortnam and Kavus Torabi worked on further arrangements with Smith’s feedback while he was incapacitated. Following Smith’s death, completing LSD became a priority for Cardiacs co-founder and bassist Jim Smith, older brother of Tim, now executive producer. “I went into the studio [Apollo 8, in 2020] and everything was busted, so I did a complete rebuild first,” Jim tells Prog. “Then me and [co-producer] Kavus got together and just plodded…

The Emerald Dawn return this autumn with an ambitious new album, the environmentally-themed The Land, The Sea, The Air. Although the double vinyl release will be in spring 2026, the CD version will be released in two parts, with the first out on October 6 via World’s End Records and the second in the spring. I bought it and I instantly fell in love with Tom Sawyer and then I got into Limelight, but the whole album I really loved. And it’s here that Maxinquaye slunk in with the stealth of a cat returning from a night of nocturnal mystery. “We’re not trying to show off; it’s about creating something genuine that feels emotionally compelling.”Clark McMenemy Modern technology has enabled the formation of bands that otherwise would never have existed. Ihlo are one such example. Having met via a Facebook meme group back in 2016, vocalist Andy Robison and guitarist and primary songwriter Phil Monro formed the band not in a dimly-lit rehearsal space, but via the internet, through meticulously-exchanged audio files and online collaborations. “I’d gotten to the point of posting some demo-quality stuff online,” Monro explains. “And I knew Andy did a bit of singing and a bit of electronic music, so I thought I’d send him a track I wrote. Moon Halo is a three-cornered musical project which has, for the most part, slipped under the prog radar.
