If you'd like to use hand-embroidery stitches to embellish the appliqué motifs on your version of Artful Elegance, consider these options. Pair at least two straight stitches at an angle to create an arrowhead look. To make arrowhead stitches, pull the needle up at A, insert it back into the fabric at B, and bring it back up at C. Continue in the same manner. Add blanket stitches to secure the edges of appliqué motifs. You can make all your stitches the same length, or vary the length of each stitch. location: Urie, Wyoming established: 1979 size: 4,500 square feet “Word of mouth brings people to our store.” When Valley Fabric Shop opened nearly 38 years ago, it stood alone in an empty field. “There was nothing here,” says owner Charla Youngberg of her remote location in Urie, Wyoming, 120 miles northeast of Salt Lake City. Even today, the community is a rural one: Sheep, cattle, and soda ash mines support about 250 people. The nearest post office—in Lyman, a community of 2,000 people—is about 3 miles away. location: Bixby, Oklahoma established: 2007 size: 2,200 square feet Situated in the cooling shade of 40 towering pecan trees, The Log Cabin Quilt Shop occupies a lofty log cabin structure in the northeastern quadrant of Oklahoma, about 10 miles southeast of Tulsa. Inside and out, the shop, completed in 2007, feels authentic with splendid samples hanging from the rafters of the A-frame cabin, kits and precuts lining country cupboards, and fabrics in warming colors and patterns filling the shelves. About 150 bolts of wildlife fabric echo the cabin’s rustic theme. “I love nature,” shop owner Dianna LeClair says. The shop offers a large collection of piecing and quilt backing options and more than 500 bolts of flannel. There’s also a demand for wool to complement the selection of small projects.…

Waiting for them at Quilt Haven on Main in Hutchinson, Minnesota (70 miles west of downtown Minneapolis), is co-owner Don Hartung, aka Tuxedo Man. “He is our ambassador of goodwill,” says Bonny, Don’s wife and co-owner of the store. She keeps a keen eye on trends and regularly adjusts her inventory to stay current.
