IN THE BEGINNING This pic is from 1957, but if you squint away the ’50s cars and trucks in the background, it could be from the ’40s. And that’s why we’re starting here. This is a scene from El Mirage Dry Lake in SoCal, where hot rods have been racing for top speed since the ’30s. Imagine the outlaw scene: Guys were knocking the fenders off their cars to save weight then hopping up engines with homegrown tactics and getting thrown in jail for street racing in Los Angeles. Yeah, that’s an airplane radial engine shoved back against the firewall of a ’39 Plymouth truck and rising from a pockmarked, raw-steel body dotted with rivets. When Gary Corns starts it up, there’s a wheeze and then a rat-a-tat-tat in the bare-metal engine bay. Smoke billows around the Plymouth and it disappears before you can comprehend what you’re looking at. “One day my dad said we needed another project,” Gary’s son Adam says. “He went over to an airplane wrecking yard, and the next thing you know this 1950s seaplane shows up on a trailer, and he says we’re gonna use the 300-hp Jacobs radial engine for the truck.” The truck is a vintage Plymouth that Gary picked…

The roads around Le Mans, France, are narrow and prone to sudden changes in direction. Climbing roses trail along brightly painted shutters, and black-hearted, red-faced poppies bop around in fields along the lanes. A four-wheel-drive Ferrari station wagon? It almost sounds like a ROADKILL project car. We consider it a problem solver, always ready with the quick solution for all kinds of potentially time-consuming mechanical quagmires. The torch can cut, weld, heat, melt, and loosen— all handy actions when working on derelict cars. Whether burning something off or burning something on, the steel-melting, 6,300-degree heat of the oxy-acetylene flame is our friend. The torch mechanism includes a tank full of oxygen, another loaded with acetone, pressure regulators, and hoses leading to a handheld torch that has one regulating knob for the fuel (acetylene) and another for the oxygen. Here’s an intro to the old school for the young generation of Roadkillers. This is how guys built the cars known as street machines in the ’80s—this one with a dip of street race and with some modern parts for extra spunk. It’s also the story of the resurrection of an old car that spent years wallowing in farm soil laden with sundry vegetal and animal residue. NO BRAKES? NO PROBLEM. IT'S SPEEDWAY, NOT STOPWAY. It’s not a race around the track so much as a slow-motion crash that lasts for four laps. The riders are contorted around the bikes, playing vibrato on the throttle, braving a mechanical bull ride inches from three other bulls. The race starts at the lift of a ribbon, which seems a delicate bit of wrapping on what turns out to be a brutal racing package.
