Among Watanabe’s recent projects was an excursion into the Blade Runner world which influenced Cowboy Bebop. Black Out 2022, directed by Watanabe and available (legally) on YouTube, is a 15-minute anime showing an event between the live-action films; namely, the catastrophic power blackout which struck Los Angeles soon after the original Blade Runner. While it’s far from Watanabe’s best work, Black Out is interesting for its crossover images, with a fighting artificial woman who could hail from Ghost In The Shell or Alita as easily as Blade Runner. We go to print days before the season draws to a close, so we’re not going to pretend to know who’s going to end up on the Iron Throne – or, indeed, if there’ll be an Iron Throne left to sit on.
