Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson) is a veteran award-winning host who reluctantly hires a female writer (Mindy Kaling) to smooth over concerns about a lack of diversity on her staff. But the two aren’t natural allies, as the acid-tongued Newbury constantly feels the heat of an ageist, sexist, ratings-obsessed industry. And, wow, does she dress down the eager rookie on her first day of work. Kaling’s wise and quick-witted screenplay, which she obviously based on personal experience, is tailor-made for multiple viewings.
