Year after year, this is always an exciting time for us here at the magazine. We’re in the midst of sending off our first issue of the year to the printer and adapting to the ever-evolving animal that is the wakeboard industry. From season to season, there are always subtle changes here in what we do, but this year we’re starting 2016 with a lot of new ideas and fresh ways to deliver content to you. We’re busy with a ton of stuff, so we wanted to make sure you’re privy to it all. We’ve all heard a wild tale or two of a boating mishap, but we weren’t prepared for how unbelievable some of these True Stories were when we gathered them from our audience. This tale begins on the Murray River in Bundalong, Australia, where a crew of nine all loaded into their new boat late one night, charted for a nearby tavern for some more drinks. Six of the nine boarded the vessel directly into the bow, and remained there to avoid getting their dirty shoes in the boat. Once underway, water started pouring in over the bow. In a desperate attempt to induce bow rise, the driver accelerated abruptly, burying the nose of the boat even further under the water. As the boat sank, everyone abandoned ship except for the…

It’s easy to overlook the Nautique Configurable Running Surface (NCRS). After all, its set-it-and-forgetit design is intended to enhance your on-water experience without the driver having to worry about it. Despite being so inconspicuous, however, the NCRS could stake a fair claim as one of the most important wakeboarding innovations in recent memory. Sound like a bit of a stretch? Well, first consider the impact the G23 and the rest of Nautique’s G series has had on wakeboarding progression over the past five years. All you need is a trampoline and an old wakeboard rope and handle to get started. If you don’t have access to a trampoline, there are plenty of trampoline gyms that you can find locally after a little bit of Web research. Dowdy says, “The best setup I’ve been to was in Toronto, where the Canadian Olympic gymnastic team trains. They had Olympic trampolines with tons of mats. It was a great setup, but a standard backyard trampoline with a rope tied to a tree works great for someone who doesn’t have access to this kind of stuff. During the fall in Florida, there comes a time when the oppressive heat of summer finally relents and the temperatures drop to give us permanent residents a break. For an extremely short period during this drop, the air temperature dips below the temperature of the water, and a dense fog forms over all the lakes. It’s eerie and really awesome-looking, and it can be very dangerous. Oli Derome and photographer Thomas Gustafson struck at the exact right time to snag the photo on our cover this month. When most of us think of Italy, wakeboarding usually doesn’t enter the equation. Ideally, before you take a trick to the water, you should be able to land it on the trampoline regular and switch, with and without the handle, and with an extra 180 in both directions past your goal trick. For example, if you want to land a tantrum on the water, you should be able to do a backflip on the trampoline, switch and regular; a tantrum to fakie; and a tantrum to blind — all with and without the handle. This will give you the maximum amount of air awareness and rotational control, preparatory to your attempt in a higher-risk environment on the water. Axis has built an impressively consistent line of wakes ever since the brand hit the market in 2009. Now that I’ve tested every boat in the Axis line over the past three years or so, in my mind, this consistency has become these boats’ strongest asset. It’s almost as if Axis first designs its entire line of wakes around the rider, and then perfects the rest of the boat from there.
