technique assessment

SHUTTER PRIORITY Geoff says… I trust Nikon’s metering system, so unless I’m shooting with flash I’ll use Shutter Priority and Matrix metering. If I want more control over my exposure I’ll dial in a little negative or positive exposure compensation to retain detail in the highlights or lift the shadows. And I always shoot Raw. SPEED TRAP Geoff says… Obviously this depends on what I’m shooting, but as a general rule of thumb I like to keep my shutter speed at 1/500 sec or faster. I’m interested in capturing a sharp shot and a little bit of noise doesn’t bother me (it’s a film grain thing), so I’m happy to shoot at higher ISOs if need be. how to: edit bike photos

TONAL ADJUSTMENTS Geoff says… I always think it’s best to nail your exposure as much as you can in-camera, so edits in Adobe Lightroom only need a light touch. I’ll typically decrease the Blacks slider to enhance the darkest tones and add contrast, and because shiny helmets tend to reflect and blow out a little, I’ll bring down the highlights a spell to compensate. GAIN SOME CLARITY Geoff says… I like to add some punch by increasing the Clarity slider – just make sure you don’t go too mad! Following that, I’ll boost the colour saturation. Once again, you only need to increase it a smidge to make the image look vibrant. Push the slider too far and you risk your image ending up looking a little bit naff. FLAT OVER WOBURN This image was totally spontaneous and happened after I watched pro rider Matt Jones jumping into that great background. I wasn’t there to shoot Matt, but it got the front cover of the BIKE Magazine Photo Annual, which is as high a coup as a mountain bike photographer can get. HADLEIGH TREE You don’t need mountains to mountain bike – this shot scored a front cover and was taken at the London 2012 course in Essex during a test event for the Olympics. The huge tree controlled the sun while hiding the oil refinery on Canvey Island! ICE IN THE BEACONS This was shot on negative film and only happened when I slipped on the sheet ice (bottom left) and noticed the good angle! It was taken in the Brecon Beacons in…
