Do you ever feel as though we are too isolated these days? It seems that most things we do are impersonal in the digital era. We spend our days typing to people who are 10 feet away in the office. We text our friends we haven’t spoken to in weeks. We keep up with family and friends on Facebook—but when was the last time you saw them in person? And, then, there is dating in the modern world. Don’t get me wrong: I do believe that dating apps have a place. I honestly do. But what about meeting someone the old fashioned way? When was the last time you talked to a stranger, much less a friend, co-worker, or your mom? I joke—but it’s something I think about frequently. So, for my…

Photographer MATTHEW SIMMONS, an Ohio native, left home in 2012 to start a photography career in Nashville. He spent three years apprenticing under internationally celebrated photographers before branching out on his own. Drawing from this experience, he strives to create imagery that is unique and constantly evolving. Simmons is a portrait photographer above all else, which is why we felt he was the perfect fit for capturing our Most Eligible Singles (page 62). “I live for that feeling, when someone looks at a photo I took and they can’t believe it’s them. You can see it in their eyes, when someone sees how beautiful they really are—that’s everything to me. A portrait can make or break how someone thinks of themselves, how they view themselves.” When he’s not on set or in…

GIRL SCOUT COOKIE BOOTH SALES 4 THROUGH MARCH 4 One-hundred-and-one years after the launch of the Girl Scout Cookie Program, the tradition continues, as troops across Middle Tennessee set up booths, from February 4 through March 4, to sell their addictive, and impactful, sweet treats. Inspiring entrepreneurship in young girls, the cookie program helps empower Girl Scout members, teaching skills, such as business ethics and money management, while also sending 100 percent of the proceeds back to local councils and troops. This year, you’ll find the return of the popular S’mores cookie, plus their crowd-pleasing favorites, like Thin Mints, Samoas, and Trefoils, at booths around Middle Tennessee. The Nashville Wine Auction’s annual Pairings weekend, February 22 through 24, will offer several events, including private vintner dinners, a “Wined Up!” event, and the Pairings dinner and wine auction, which wraps up the weekend. NWA CEO Holly Whaley says the event has tripled in size since its inception. “It started out with just one night. As we’ve grown, we’ve gone from having eight winemakers to three-times as many, having three-times the events, and even making three-times the money,” she says. “It’s all new and fresh, and a non-intimidating way for people to learn about wine,” she adds. “That’s why we started it six years ago.” The Pairings dinner, which takes place Saturday night, will be created by chefs from Nashville and New Orleans, the event’s partner city for the year. The…

In 2014, Liz Veyhl founded Small World Yoga (SWY), a nonprofit that makes yoga available to diverse communities that don’t otherwise have access. The need was clearly there: In 2017 alone the organization doubled in size, from serving 30 partner locations to 57. Now, more than 1,300 people take advantage of the free asanas offered in libraries, schools, shelters, and elsewhere every month. This spring, the organization takes another big leap forward, opening what will be Nashville’s first nonprofit yoga studio. Age: 33 Granted: In 2016, Veyhl received a small grant from The Boedecker Foundation to support the SWY annual fund. When SWY went to apply again the next year, the Foundation asked if having a physical space (in an unused building they owned) was something that would serve its mission. “We…
